Onion Danger? ??

OKay so as I understand, Onions are a big no-no for the birds due to potential toxin.

There is a package of seeds that I stored in the Freezer and it has picked up freezer smell of ONions. Seeds that SMELL like ONions are still OK for my bird to eat? Or not? ????

I wouldn't...the oils etc are potent. I'm sure your bird will be okay, but I wouldn't do it again. They smell like onion because they have onion on them...juices, oils etc.

WAIT-- did they touch the onions ever? If they never touched the onions, it's less likely that there is much danger...but I am not sure how they would get a strong onion smell w/o close contact.

They definitely did Not come in contact. Frozen Chopped onions from Market Basket always have a very strong onion smell, normally I put them inside like 2 additional plastic bags before I put them in the freezer but looks like I missed a bag. The unopened bag of safflower seeds --- (I got them to mix with the dehydrated veggie-chop mix, and also for treats or theoretical training - heh, that never happens!) ---might have been near the onions. Or they might have not been. I did move them at least once, so not sure. But they picked up the onion smell regardless. This is pretty common - the Mkt Basket frozen chopped onions are just, well, Really Oniony. But, absolutely No onions Touched any seeds because seeds were in Sealed bag.

BUT they definitely picked up onion smell. I have them sitting now in a Colander on the Outflow-side of an air-filter...( I emptied the bag into colander with hope of dispersing the odor away from the seeds)... but the seeds still have some smell of onion and also now the room is taking on a subtle odor of onion also.

Do you think I should throw out these seeds? IF so, I will have to give up on keeping seeds in my freezer. I don't use onion very often anymore, so I keep Frozen Onions for rare onion-use occasions. Onion-freezer-odors do happen to other frozen items in my freezer occasionally.

I am inclined to say that they are PROBABLY okay??? if they never touched and both bags were sealed, but IDK. The smell could have gotten on the plastic but it's a bit weird that they smell so strongly. I mean, I cook with onion and the bird is fine...but she doesn't eat it. I wish I could give better advice lol.

I mean, if it is super strong, that's a bit odd...just not really sure...
