Play Area for Medium/Large Parrot?

I think you may have answered your own question, when a parrot owner 's pictures impressed you.....maybe the only comments I might add are that while I've not seen the macaw play area, if it has any carpet on it, I would forget that and I would probably make the little condo huts with entry from both ends...closed areas tend to give hens nesting ideas, maybe even to making them look more like lanais/porches.....other than that, sounds like a fun project that your feathered friend should enjoy.....just keep balance & height in mind when you're designing & figuring a base for your project.....

Oh, and why exactly wouldn't the carpet be a good idea? Difficult cleaning, toenails getting stuck in the fabric?

Some birds will chew the carpet, causing impaction.....Purdue University's vet college has posted this statement "Many pet birds will chew on macramé, carpet and other similar fabrics and sometimes swallow these objects resulting in crop and intestinal impactions."

Crop & intestinal impactions often require invasive surgery.....
