I would really like to have a swing for my Hahn's macaw, but unfortunately I live in an apartment and cannot drill holes in the ceiling to hang it. :( Would a collapsible curtain rod in between a doorway/archway support a swing and a bird? I was just thinking a maybe building a larger play stand and incorporating the swing into it. Any suggestions?

You want the swing in the doorway? Wouldn't you have to kneel to go into or out of the room?
I'm not quite sure what you could use as far as the ceiling goes, we're allowed to drill holes in ours, as long as we cover it up with a filler before moving, same thing with the walls.
I'm sure some of the handier members will be able to help you :)

I'm not sure if a curtain rod would be sturdy enough, but a shower rod that twists tightly into place would probably work, if you can find one that will collapse in enough to fit your door opening.....

Good luck.....

I'm sure if you're hand enough you could modify it and make it work after shortening it.

Or one of those chin-up bars, made for door ways.

A thought, bar in two doorways, rope strung between. Rig a couple supports for sag ( couple of 1 X's, base in bucket of sand, secured to rope) hang off this. Even a tripod, tent pole fashion. If room has a ceiling light, it would be simple to modify it to hang stuff from it- keeping saftely first!

Thanks for all the replies! Most of the ceilings are covered with 1'x1' squares (not a drop ceiling though) and the 2 bedrooms have stucco sprayed ceilings. So it would be hard to patch up if I drilled into it.

Interesting using exercise equipment as play stands. :)

I would love to build and hang an orbiter like the one from this post:

Have you thought about using shelving brackets? You can put them on either side of the door and attach the material to them. And you can always buy ones that aren't painted, like SS.

Another idea, do a search for 'door hanger for jackets' everything from simple to elegant!

I'm not sure, but isn't there hanging plant hooks (shepard hooks) that have a stand on the bottom or could be modified? That way you could move it anywhere and change out the toy, swing, etc....

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
A PVC stand would work.

If you don't want anything that large, you could just use one of those doorway chin up bars.

I've used Shower Curtain Rods for hanging stuff as well.
