First, I know that ANY cloth/rope/other fiber needs to be closely monitored around parrots because of the risk of ingestion or entanglement.

I want to start rigging hammocks and safety nets for my disabled Eckie, Tuscon. I'm just wondering if anyone has any best/worst fabric suggestions from a health and safety standpoint?

I think sisal rope is your best bet! I believe it is the safest because they can digest it (don't quote me on that, but I THINK that's what I've read somewhere). I'm not sure if you can get any that isn't tiny twine, but it's worth a try!

I have cotton rope perches and boings that I monitor carefully. I haven't seen Kyo chew them or found any sign of fraying yet, but I know it's a common problem.

In theory any natural rope or fabric should be safe to chew on ( and digest though they don't actively eat it)

I would probably look at the organic, undyed cotton or hemp canvas (a SUPER durable fabric):
Organic Cotton Woven Fabric | Natural Color | Twill, Canvas, Sateen, Voile, Muslin and more! | Organic Cotton Plus
Hemp - Hemp Wovens | Organic Cotton Plus
(towards the bottom of the page)

OR if you want something a little softer, this mink fabric is awesome:

I made my moms GCA a little "tent" lined with this stuff (the little bumpy stars) when he had his stroke, and he still loves snuggling up in it (it is now hung up on his sleeping branch):) It's VERY soft and very comforting to a disabled bird and he's never chewed on it. I used canvas on the outside of the tent. I wish I had a picture.

Thanks thanks everyone! Tucson is doing very well, but with his new health he is getting braver, and with his bravado come some scary situations! He almost fell from the tree perch upside down! Here is the thing though: he falls like a dog. He does NOT open his wings voluntarily, not even when falling, so he falls like a non bird, and could seriously injured himself. Even so, I refuse to leave him locked in his cage or sitting on top of it the rest of his life!

I thought fleece (carefully monitored), was okay because the fabric itself doesn't fray?
