Tips and Tricks to get him playing

My newly adopted pionus, Rookie, is settling in nicely and as a result is getting more noisy during the day while I'm gone at work! I think the primary issue is that he is bored/lonely since when I am home he's practically attached to me or interestingly watching my boyfriend. On weekends he's out of the cage nearly all day long but on the weekdays he's out for a little bit in the morning before I go to work and then out for some hours after I get home until bedtime.

If it's a lonely issue, I'm thinking of getting a small radio to play so that there's something to listen to/chatter with during the day. For boredom... he's not interested in many toys. Really the only time he touches his toys is when I'm trying to get him to go to sleep and he's being a little feathery butt. I have tried placing treats within toys and playing with them myself to get him interested and it works-ish when I'm around but as of yet he doesn't play with anything while I'm at work. He sits around, eats, and screams, which is understandable since he's bored.

Any tips and tricks to continue to get him engaged in toys so that he can play independently while my boyfriend and I are at work during the day? I'm not only concerned about grumpy neighbors because of his screeching but more worried about him developing behavioral issues/anxiety issues because of boredom during the day.

Thanks all. Any help is appreciated. <3

I'd suggest offering as many different toys and treats as you can afford, to see what he likes. Also, there are tons of "free" toys and treats around the house... safe veggies (no onion, no avocado), low-fat nuts... coconut shells, toothpicks, egg shells...
MYSAFEBIRDSTORE online has tons of safe, cheap toys and toy parts (which the Rb loves best).
As for grumpy neighbors, I recommend cookies, gift certificates, flowers. I have used these proactively and reactively. I also made my ol' man mow a lady's lawn a few times!
Good for you for reaching out. The SEARCH tab above is really good for researching things you want to know about.

First, get the radio and place it on either a station that has talk shows or news all day. If you choose music station, target something that would be comfortable for a 70+ year old or very young child as to not upset others or the Parrot. Nothing worst than an edgy Parrot that has been exposed to coarser music all day! I find the news stations are a better choice since all you have to do is set the volume.

It is very possible that your Parrot was never allowed to play or taught to play. So, you need to target a cross-section of toys that are made of 'very' soft wood and other soft materials. Take care that cloth toys do not become stringy - they will need to be kept trimmed as quickly as you start to see strings!

Getting your Parrot to play with them commonly involves you playing with them while your Parrot is near by!

NOTE #1: Most Parrots do not like new stuff just showing up! Commonly, it is better for the 'stuff' to show-up in the room and over a period of time (based on your Parrot) they move close and slowly become part of the stuff you are playing with with your Parrot.

NOTE #2: Near everyone that has a Parrot will have a collection of toys that their Parrot will not touch. With time, you will begin seeing which toys have interest and which do not! At that point, you either take the toy(s) apart and use the pieces to create a different toy nearer to what your Parrot likes or you swap with other Parrot owners!

Enjoy!

FYI: When a Parrot begins to play with a toy, they commonly make very small parts of it! So, if the toy you just purchased becomes pieces on the bottom of the stand or cage, that is seen as a good sign!

Thank you both for the replies! @GaleriaGila I absolutely adore mysafebirdstore and that is in fact where Rook's new foraging toys are coming in from tomorrow! I will just keep messing with different types of toys to figure out what he likes. He's very food-motivated so I figured any type of foraging toy would be a favorite of his but the 2 I have now he has shown little to no interest in during the day.

@Sailboat thanks for the tip on the talk radio! I was going to actually choose a classical music station as they do some "gentle" talking and the rest of the music is engaging/calming. But news/talk radio sounds like a great idea too! I also was unaware of the string thing so I am in the cage now trimming his rope perch! I was warned it needed to be replaced quite often but I was not advised to keep the strings trimmed. Now that it's been mentioned that seems like a very obvious safety hazard to take care of.

I will take all into consideration and just keep offering new and (hopefully) exciting things while taking care not to provide too many new toys at once and incorporating them slowly. I greatly appreciate y'all <3
