The cause of Pacho's passing ?

Well I think I may have discovered what caused my poor Pacho to die too soon and in misery.

I was reviewing my photo collection this morning with the plan to take them somewhere to have them printed professionally. When I saw this photo it hit me like a lead brick. I have been in tears since I saw it.

After reading all the horror stories about those snuggle hurts.

She must have been eating the rope perch not just ripping it up.
I will never know for sure. She was never big at playing with toys and I was glad she had found something to keep her occupied.

Bingo has a perch just like it in his cage. That is going to change TODAY.

I put this up as a warning to others. If you see this kind of ware in a rope perch, get rid of it. Much better to be safe than very sorry later.

Thank you for warning me about this. My birds are small and don't chew their rope perches, but I'll be sure to get rid of them if I notice any chewing or ripping them apart. Also, I do check them daily and see no loose threads.

Oh I'm so sorry about the loss of your buddy! 😢

I haven't got a rope perch yet but will definitely be looking out for fraying when I do get one.

Try not being so hard on yourself...out may not have been the cause. Take away from the situation your wonderful memories with him and know to look for fraying.

Again, I'm so sorry for your loss.

As you so well stated, you will never know for sure, but what an enlightening regarding those products!

We have never had the huts, but the ropes have always been part of our Amazon's cages and play structures. Our Amazons always worked on those ropes and if not for my dear wife's need to neatness, at all times, we could have likely suffered the same. She trims those ropes at least every other day and I will never make comment about that ever again.

Salty has one of them for his main hang out, but he does not chew on them. Some strands break from wear, but at that point we just chuck them out. I keep 2 spares on hand. A good warning for all of us though. If you see your parrot has chewed something up, and you dont see pieces of it on the cage floor, it might have passed into the parrot. WE just threw of of those soft rubber hidey type balls away because Salty had chewed a hole into it. We did find little schnibbles of it in the cage floor, I think not enough to account for the amount chewed and missing, but his poops are fine and his appetite is too.

It is indeed hard to know, Wes. It is possible Pacho may have shredded and chewed without swallowing. But your experience serves as another reminder to either rid cages of rope toys for those who chew them or carefully observe remnants below - something not easy to account for.

It was just one of those things that come clear all at once. Like finding the puzzle pieces that makes the picture whole.

If may even have been deliberate on Pacho's part though I know it sounds unlikely.
She was very depressed after loosing her friend and mate Plumas.

Her symptoms fit with a stoped up digeston system. Only passing liquid and not eating.
By the time I spotted a problem she was to sick for an X-ray.
Multiple fails on my part.

A friend of mine had her macaw get his foot caught in a rope perch. She got home in time to rescue him but he was pretty upset, it's lucky he didn't gnaw his foot off or something. I'm going to stay away from them, but maybe I'm speaking from a position of being lucky to have plenty of free natural branches from non-poisonous trees on my property. Though, at the rate Ruby is going through them, I'm going to run out of fallen branches long before she runs out of beak.

texsize, it's good to think of safety for others but going down this road isn't something I want to see you do. Trust me it can break you

you can keep the rope perches as out of cage toys, even change to sizal rope but don't spend every day thinking "what if" and please don't think she died on purpose. She was mourning and sad but she loved you and didn't want to leave. she wouldn't have fought for so long if she wanted to leave
