Hi everyone!

For the last 2 months, I've had a bendable cotton rope toy for my GCC Nova. It is his absolute favorite place-- where he sleeps, plays with his toys, and sits with his cage door open. Sadly, I've noticed a lot of very fine fuzz from fraying for a bird who doesn't play with it at all :(

I've heard that cotton rope perches that are tied tighter (the white rope in the image below) are a lot less prone to fraying, which is nice for long-term use and cleaning! I've seen nice recommendations of places with ropes like this, but sellers such as Grey Feather Toys have apparently gone out of business..

My question is: what is this type of rope called? I don't even know how to begin searching for it! Or alternatively, is there a brand that carries higher-quality rope perches? Nova loves it so much, and I can't see getting rid of it, and I hope that I can replace it with something safer for my son!

Thank you, any advice at all would be appreciated. I'm so devastated that his favorite rope is fraying after such a short time!!

Here's one that Petco sells:

Windy City Parrots sells this one:

But they also sell the type of rope you're looking for by the length so you can make your own toys with it:

Aviplay is another great place, in the UK, but they have a lot, here's one example:

Adventure Bound Cotton Rope Perch

BirdCages4Less is probably the best place, if you search through the site you'll find a bunch, and they come in different diameters depending on what species of bird you have...Here's the best example they have, comes in either green or white and is flexible and long:

Wow! Thank you so much Ellen, these are exactly what I was looking for! I'm still so new to the know-how about where to find nice bird toys, you've brought a huge ease to me to know that Nova won't have to give up his favorite perches.. Thank you so, so much :D

My Conure has a Boing that is the same thing. It is absolutely his favorite place to be. He spends hours on it and literally loves to bounce on it like a spring.

He spends a lot of time at the bottom playing with the bell and this has caused to rope to fray somewhat. He's had it for about three months so I'll probably just buy another one since it wasn't expensive. BUT, I will look into the ones recommended to you.

I have been looking at rope perches for awhile now and wondering if i should get them.

Do you thinks birds other than parrots would really enjoy them? All my birds have their flight feathers, so I would wonder if they would actually want to sit on something that moves under them all the time?

I think they find it comfortable to perch on for sure. My personal issue with rope perches is fraying and the possibility of ingestion of fibers by the parrot. If the material is synthetic or even cotton, it may accumulate in the crop causing an impaction. The bird may also be unable to pass it causing impaction to his tract. There is also the threat of getting the bird's feet tangled in frayed threads. Lastly, rope perches attract a lot of bacteria because they are absorbent. This is made worse because they are not easy to clean. You can't just wipe them down like you would wooden perches. They'd have to be hand or machine washed daily or regularly to prevent bacteria build up. Dirty perches have been known to cause infections and irritations in birds' feet.

I'm describing to you the worst scenario of course. Some have had rope perches with no issue at all. Perhaps you could try natural wooden perches with soft texture? There are those grapevine ones or knotted perches that have velvety texture.

My vet suggested using vet wrap on them if you have them in the cage. It won’t fray and when it needs cleaning, just replace the wrap.

Enzo has a spiral rope ladder in her cage that stretches and bounces when she puts her weight on it, she absolutely loves playing on it.

Mine, too!

As you read, some are concerned about fraying, bacteria, injuries. Vet wrap solves these problems. Instead of buying several ropes, get vet wrap.

I am a rookie and not sure if this actually is a duplicate so not including the site address.

Drs. Foster and Smith has been bought by Petco. Many more than usual items including perches are clearance priced. I stocked up for future needs!
