So I don't usually get excited about bird toys, I make a lot of my own because I have a huge issue spending $15-$20 on one wooden toy that they are just going to break apart in a few hours. So I usually make my own toys for them, or order them in-bulk once every couple of months from online bird stores...HOWEVER, I have to say that I am seriously impressed with the Shredders that I took a chance on and purchased on a whim. It only costs $4.69 for 30 feet of the stuff, so no big loss if they hated it or if they just ripped it right apart in 5 minutes and were done with it...Well, let me tell you that if you are looking for an activity that will keep your birds busy FOR HOURS and that seems to hold-up pretty well and does present a "job" for your bird(s) to really get-into and work at, then I highly suggest you pick-up a package of Shredders from Petco or online (I know Petco sells it, I'm sure it's sold elsewhere, but I've not seen it anywhere else). At Petco it's in a package hanging with the rest of the bird toys.

You get 30 feet of this stuff per package, and you can hang it/weave it all over and throughout your bird's cage/cage-bars, so not only do they work at ripping it apart, but they spend a ton of time just trying to "unweave" it from the cage bars if you do a good job of weaving it through and also wrapping it around the bars...And it's 1 inch in width, but it's made-up of small strips of the paper weaved together, so it's really pretty strong, and they cannot easily rip it, they actually have to "take it apart"; I was watching Kane try to do this and it was just like he was working at a puzzle. That's what I like about it.

I started putting fresh Shredders throughout each of my guy's cages in the morning right before I leave for work (around 8:00), and they immediately start working on it. By the time I come home for lunch to let the dogs out and check on the birds (between noon and 1:00) they are STILL WORKING ON IT!!! And even Kane can't just rip it apart easily with his beak, so forget about the smaller birds! Bowie and Lita went absolutely nuts over this stuff, and I thought Lita was going to have a stroke she was going at it with such intensity, my god she was making all kinds of noises I've never heart before!!! So they all LOVE IT, and I went back and bought the remaining 3 boxes that my local Petco had out!!! (No, I do not own stock in the company that makes this stuff, lol...I'm just really impressed by it)...

So if you work all day long and are looking for an activity for your bird's to do that will keep them busy throughout the day, I highly suggest that you swing by your Petco or get online and buy a package. It's absolutely worth at least trying at only $4.69 a package....it really is like a "job" they work at...And the other nice thing is that it doesn't get shredded into tiny little pieces/splinters all over the place like the wood toys do. Give it a shot and see if they like it...make sure you really do a good job of weaving it all throughout their cage-bars, wind it around the cage bars, etc. so they really have to work at getting it off, because they can't just "rip" it apart, they have to unwind/unweave it...

That won't work with Nike, she's not a shredder. But I do have something that keeps her busy all day.....it's called my shoulder!

Cairo the Ekkie!
I just found out that Cairo loves similar toys after our Secret Santa gave him some toys from Planet Pleasures (I believe the Octopus Piñata and the Firecracker). He flew from perch to perch to play with them, so I definitely am going to find some way to get my hands on that roll of shredders!

Thanks for sharing!!

I'm telling you, if Cairo like to "shred" things, give it a shot. Kane and Lita won't let it alone for hours after I wrap their cages up in it! Kane actually works at unraveling the small strands from it...Cannot beat it for the price either...and it's made from Palm-leaves, so no worries if they happen to swallow some.

Well that's not really fair Bill, NOTHING is going to beat the shoulder...

All are rescues- had to leave their previous homes for 'reasons', are still in contact with them :)
Thanks for the tip ;)
Not sure if we have it overhere, but now I have seen the packege etc. at least I will know it is "one of the good ones" if I *do* happen to see it anywhere.

(9.1 metres does not sound like much though - that would go around the cage just once ;) but I like the 'weave it between the bars'-idea -> I am pretty sure Appie would absolutely love it. )

Christa, if you got a smaller cage then the Shredders would go further for you ;)

It's good stuff, I'm telling you...I just wrapped an entire package all around Kane's cage last night so he'd be ready to go today...He looked a bit overwhelmed this morning by, like he wasn't sure where to start!
