Warning about giving your parrots boxes!!

Please do not give your bird boxes, they are no longer safe? A lot of companies are lately using disinfectant and spraying down everything due to COVID-19 and heard several birds have recently died as a result. One person on Facebook cockatoo past away today for this reason and three others in the past couple of weeks. Putting this out their to warn others before it is to late.

Re: Warning about giving your parrots boxes!!

Thanks for the warning, a horrible consequence of Covid. I had not thought of this very obvious risk!

I purchase pellets mail-order, will be careful and clean the thick paper container before opening. While disinfectants may be applied only to exterior, better safe than sorry!

Re: Warning about giving your parrots boxes!!

Cardboard boxes being shipped into North America and Europe have long been sprayed with water based bug killing agents.

Not sure how wide spread disinfectant spraying is as spraying all cardboard boxes is not likely as both the monster virus and stray disinfectant have limited life on 'dry' cardboard surfaces. The life of disinfectant within a closed box would be longer, but once the box is open, and remains open, the effectiveness and toxic status would mitigate rapidly.

Disinfectant shipping box spray has been common for medical (mediation) for a very long time.

High speed (at manufacturers' facility) packaging has also been around for a long time with most items. The limited to no Human contact would vastly limit the need for such an additional step.

One possible packaging process maybe something found at retailers shipped from their warehouse to customers. In this type of packaging, it would be likely that a manual 'hand spray unit' maybe used to spray the contain of the box prior to closing and sealing of the box.

In todays World, near anything is possible, but this story has all the hallmarks of a Facebook story. Zero supporting evidence, zero involvement of a Avian Medical Professional, zero reporting back to any level of government oversight agencies.

Packaging is problematic to begin with as any number of toxic agents are used or come in contact with the box. Care should be taken.

FYI: Personally, I would be more concern with the vast amounts of Hand Sanitizer use, especially in small enclosed areas. That product displaces oxygen...

Yes Facebook, so could be any numbers of reasons, as not widespread? One case was definitely caused by the box as person had a Necropsy done after their Umbrella cockatoo past away shortly after tearing up the box and bird has no Prior health issues? One major online retailer, not going to name company is known to spray pallets due to COVID-19 protocols they have in place. Two other birds that past away are questionable as no tests were done to confirm.

More of a be cautious, then a widespread panic issue. Something honestly I didn’t even worry or think about myself. Still say avoid boxes for now due to more of a consequence of COVID-19 protocols in place, more then placing blame on retailers. Hence reason not going to mention company. It a much different time and anything is possible and not of the norm?

Necropsy will list the cause of death. Very likely didn't list death by crewing box, but would have listed the agent found to cause the death. Such a death would have to be reported to over-sight government agent and additional test would be required at State Level.

Sadly, with the agent(s) likely used/ over-used in the home, now a days, the true source will likely not be found.

Aaaa, Facebook...
