I would really like to start getting into breeding at some point and i have started to think what i would start with. Possibly thinking about getting my Sun conure a BF but a bit aprehensive about it right now.

So I am thinking smaller. Maybe lovebird or parrotlet. Leaning more toward parrotlet.

Couple questions. I am in the very beginning faze and i don't want to get a new bird for at least another year (and get a new place) But what are your experiences with these breeds?

Are they fairly east to start out with? Also thoughts on buying breeder pairs or finding to birds and paring yourself.

I've got a couple of years to retirement, and I would love to do some hobby breeding... I've had birds for the majority part of my life, but have never tried to breed them...

I just recently bought a breeding pair of GCCs, but I'm starting to question if they really are a breeding pair...

We just got two pairs of p'lets yesterday so I'll let you know how it goes lol. We had the option to wait and get proven pairs that are currently on eggs or get younger ones and have them paired for us by the breeder. I opted to get the younger ones, I wasn't sure how old the adult pairs were and I know they usually only breed until they are 4-6 and then it slows down or stops all together. We got them from a woman that has been breeding for about 25 years and owns a bird store so I completely trusted her to pair them up for us. We just got them yesterday but sure enough, each pair slept together, on the same perches and seem to hitting it off quite well. I've been trying to give them some privacy(which is killing me because I just want to sit and watch them all day!), let them get settled in and hopefully they will start to really bond with each other and investigate their boxes.

With the smaller birds I think you are safe buying individuals and pairing them up that way, they seem to much more adaptable with their mates then some of the larger species and since most of them don't breed when they get to be older I think it's good to start out with younger guys, just reaching sexual maturity.
