hi
is there a parrotlet thread starter or is there a section that includes them like budgies & cockatiels section etc...

I went into a shop looking for some toys for my lovebird and fell for the personality of the parrotlets. didn't get one from the shop, I went home read up on them and got my baby from a fab breeder and couldn't be more happy!

so thought id see if there was a place to talk about them here, get any advice, tips and such. thanks

There is no actual forum for Parrotlet's, but maybe they will make one hmmm :) Its nice you started a thread. I've had mine for almost 2 1/2 years. Female Pacific, split to Lutino. She is an absolute doll, when she isn't being a Birdzilla  So welcome and ask away...

I wasn't sure if they were under a different heading so thought id ask :)
I only got my baby on 5th aug, he is an American white with a lovely personality. he already steps up and loves a head scritches. has the cutiest tweet noise! could go on about him forever haha...

my lovebird on the other hand isn't so impressed with our new lodger so extra supervision will be needed.

Extra supervision is a must... Plets tend to take on larger birds to their own detriment. Kiwi was almost killed by my Senegal, but Kiwi was "always" the instigator. I rehomed my Senegal, and just have Kiwi now. Lovebirds can be nasty with their own and with other birds as well.

American whites are pretty, pictures please :) Kiwi is molting and I am noticing a lot of yellow coming through. Her father was bright yellow with ruby red eyes, and her mom was Green, split to something else. So Kiwi is split to Lutino, and something else, but I can't remember. I just remember the lutno :30:

Anyway, I have no intentions of breeding her so it doesn't matter. Parrotlet's are becoming very popular, and they are fun to have. How old is your baby? They go through their terrible two at about 4 months. So you may notice it or you may not. As long as you work with her everyday, she should get through it just fine. I notice Kiwi got a little moody and territorial but once it passed she was fine. They don't like crinkle paper, or plastic bags. I don't know what it is about them but you will find out and she will go ballistic. Shaking her head and stomping around like a lil dinosaur. You will know it when you see it. Give her a dish of shallow water to bath in everyday.

Also don't feed her exclusively a pelleted diet. They need a varied diet that consist of pellets, seeds, fresh veggies and fruits, beans, pasta, some breads. Etc... The sooner you introduce (you may already have) fresh veggies and fruit the better. Have fun with her.

yes my lovie flew over to he's cage (sat ontop) and lunged at him, I was up quicker than a flash! so now baby bird will be placed in a safe room while pip (lovebird) is roaming and vice-versa.

is that kiwi in your profile pic? that was the colour of the parrotlets in the pet shop that drew my attention. very pretty

my baby boy is 14wks, forgot ask breeder for hatch day - if that's the right term haha but im going to call him and ask. yes I read that a lot of bird go through the tantrum-teens stage I shall keep myself ready :)

question about food actually, ive got some food (seed mix) from breeder to tide me over until I get a mix from my local shop. what seed mix would you recommend? I know some birds can eat other seeds like canary, budgie etc... the mix I have looks same as my lovebirds mix.
as with fresh food he tucked into a bit of banana earlier and yesterday ate tiny bit of spinach, offered half a small grape but didn't try it. i'm going to try broccoli and mixed veg. do they like apples, strawberries? and how would dried fruit mixes go down?

sorry for question overload, although I did read about them on the web - there's nothing better than first hand experience. :) thanks
will put pics on soon, I have to upload them from the camera. x

oh forgot to ask, if its better introducing one fruit/veg at a time instead of a mixed palette for example? not sure what breeder started on but he did mention they love their fresh food.
also he has millet in his cage at all times, was told its good for them at this age? where as my lovebird only has millet for treat when im trying to tame him and he's fav food is millet :-D

Yes, that is Kiwi in the picture, but she is becoming more yellow like her daddy.

When it comes to food, personally I prefer a human grade organic product. Like Australian blend from Goldenfeast. Kiwi loves it and so do I (haha i don't eat it though). So she gets that daily.

Australian Blend | Goldenfeast Direct

Then in a separate bowl she either gets fresh organic (whatever I have on hand) veggies and some fruit or I will make her Volkmans Birdezz Buffett which is a 15 min. soak n serve. Along with some chia seeds mixed in either in with the veggies n fruit, or in the Volkmann.

Spinich (fresh) is great, brocolli, bell peppers, all peppers really, carrots, the list goes on. But NO rhubarb or avacado or chocolate. Most fruits are great in small quantities, apple, berries, etc. I prefer fresh or frozen, but frozen is ok too.

http://www.parrotforums.com/parrot-...afe-fresh-foods-toxic-food-lists-sprouts.html

Seeds are ok but not the main dish, feed fresh at least twice a day, morn/eve and then offer some seed and or pellets to snack on throughout the day. Don't forget fresh dandelion (make sure they haven't been sprayed) from the garden, and other herbs. Dandelion is great for the liver for humans and animals.

I hope I was able to answer your questions.

Either way is ok... your bird will usually pick out what they like. But you could also just offer a nice piece of broccoli and see what happens. Millet is great, but it's comfort food. Parrotlet easily become millet junkies. They usually wean to millet and then slowly over to other foods. Over time I weaned my millet junkie, off of it and now I use millet for training and when my bird is stressed or sick.

So if your going to use it for training as you tame him, use is exclusively for that purpose. If they are not ga go for millet then find another treat to use and use that exclusivity. Try and train when they are the most hungry, in the morning.

Awww... Parrotlets are seriously adorable mini parrots. I was almost tempted into bringing one home once, but my unruly jumbo bird might have had it for a snack:54: I do love them though, just sooooo cute!

LOL - yeah after the P'let terrorizes for awhile. They never get the last word when it comes to larger, more powerful bird they decide to take on.

They are really cute and soon easy to spoil. Yesterday Kiwi was having a Birdzilla day, not wanting too much interaction with me or anyone else, so she was completely content and stayed in her outside cage most of the day.

Then today she is all lovey dove, like "no! don't leave me"

Funny lil bird needs to make up her mind :30:
