Well, I originally said I was never going to adopt out Zombie once I got her back, but it seems that plans have changed. Sort of anyways. My 10 year old daughter decided that Zombie is going to be her bird, and told me so in no uncertain terms. They actually get along really well, and Zombie seems to like her a lot, so maybe it will be best for the both of them.
I decided that she can have Zombie, if she shows some responsibility first, by getting together everything Zombie needs on her own. Meaning she has to get a cage, dishes, perches, toys, etc. I let her buy an extra cage from me for $20 the other day. The cage was worth more than $20, but I thought I would help her out a little, and she did make me proud when she chose it. She asked if we could look online at cages because she got the money from my mom for helping her do yard work the other day, so I said sure. She found a small cage for $15, but she said she would rather spend the extra money to get Zombie a bigger cage. So I told her that it was really showing some good responsibility on her part that she was putting her bird's well-being above herself.
I am also not going to make her necessarily buy, in cash, everything she needs. I told her, since I have plenty of extra dishes, and toy parts if not actual toys, that she can work to earn the stuff she needs. Like when I take cages apart to take them outside to hose them down and scrub them, it will take me 5 or 6 hours to do them all well. If she helps with that, she might earn the dishes she needs for her cage. Stuff like that. The only thing I really don't have any extras of are perches. However, a friend of mine might have a couple extra, so she said this weekend she might have some work she can do to earn a couple perches.
The only thing I told her she doesn't really have to worry about is food. I told her as long as she does her regular chores that she already does anyway, I'll make sure she always has food for Zombie. I don't see the point in making her buy a special bag of food for Zombie, when I buy it in bigger, cheaper bags because I have more birds anyway. However, I did tell her I will make her buy her own bird food if she chooses to not do her chores.
So really, Zombie is getting "adopted", but she isn't even leaving the house. It does, however, free up a cage for when I have babies again that are ready to go into a cage, since I may have brought home a linnie the other day. The wife wasn't too thrilled, but I think she is past the point of complaining, because it doesn't do much good. Oops.
