She is 3 1/2yrs old. We've had her for a week. Trying to figure out what to feed her and how...as far as fruits and veggies go....

She was sent home with this and millet. He said she like kiwis and apples. Not sure how to feed it too her though cause she only takes a couple pecks. Don't know what veggies she likes...he hasn't messaged me back yet grrr....

Ok I'm far from an expert, and mostly I'll be rehashing what other folks have said here. And full disclosure: Bumble's breeder weaned her on to fresh food and she eats everything I put in front of her, so I'm lucky and haven't had to do any of this stuff I'll mention below.

First and foremost, an all seed diet is not good for her. Too much fat. An ideal diet would be (in this order) fresh veggies, fresh fruit, pellets, seeds. Oh and I'm the fresh category they can also have pasta and grains and potatoes and sprouts (sprout your own. Super easy and birds LOVE them).

As for what she likes-experiment. Just give her everything and see if she'll eat it. If she doesn't like it, prepare it differently (cooked instead of raw, cut into bigger/smaller shapes, etc.). Eat with her (use your own plate - our saliva is toxic to them). If she sees you enjoying something she might decide to try it. Wait a week and give her whatever she didn't like last week. Rotate it so it stays interesting. Have fun exploring options with her. I've tried several new things since Bumble came home.

Pellets: there are a million brands. I picked Harrison's because it seems to be high quality and I'm able to get it locally. Regardless of what you choose, the Harrison's website has information on how to do a drastic diet change that may be helpful.

Oh and make sure you get that little sweetheart into a certified avian vet for a new bird well-check. They will also be able to help you with diet and it's a good idea to establish a relationship before you need one.

Certified avian vet sooner then later, for a full wellness check up. They should be running a complete set of tests, when she is feeling good, so that if something comes up, they have a base line of data to work from. It's the single most thing you owe your new parrot to have.

Fresh is what I'm after, I thought it was strange he didn't mention too much about fresh food. I will be changing that...Her vet records will be this week. And Monday I'll be making an appointment [emoji4]

Not everyone knows that birds need a lot of variety and fresh foods. Marcy is lucky she found you. How come the previous owner rehomed her?

He's in college and recently just got a job also. And found that he didn't have enough time to spend with her as he used too. He just wanted her to have a good home. He gave her to us for free along with her cage and accessories.
