Is this a disease?

Hi

My forpus coelestis :blue2: couple who were the parents of five young recently started to run out of feathers mainly on their heads. :(

I have had other couples in the same place and this has never happened.

I choose a seed mix without sunflowers and recommended by many breeders of this species.

I regularly give a vitamin complex and calcium. I also give them lots of vegetables and fruit including nuts, cashews, almonds.
I really don't know how to treat this problem

Has anyone had this kind of problem with parrots?

What treatment was or is it recommended for these cases?

Many thanks for any help.
Arnaldo

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
It could be....it kind of looks like PBFD but it's hard to say (and PBFD isn't as common in these birds- at least, not in the wild...but it can be spread to them and it can be dormant for years).. it could also be nutritional (never want to give a bird seeds only), fungal, or even plucking (although the odds of plucking in that location are very very low).

When was the last time you had them to a vet and have they ever had blood tests?

Any seeds in their poop?

Over or under dosing on vitamins can also lead to feather issues.

Where are you located?

Again-vitamin complexes can be quite toxic and unless you have had vitamin panels run on your birds to show a deficiency, I would NOT supplement without explicit instruction by a bird specialist.

Is your cage very clean? How is the humidity?

In my opinion, disease or a nutritional issue (including a possible vitamin overdose) is MUCH more likely (although it's not IMPOSSIBLE that they could be fighting- what are their genders?)-- when you have a second, look at the questions I asked above. That may help people respond.
Do you see them fighting?

I think you would see more than this and I think there would be blood..or other obvious signs of conflict or obsessive mating (but it's on both birds, so it's probably not mating).

Looking at just the Yellow bird I would say it looks like over-preening.
Only the head is missing feathers, the rest of the body looks good.
Birds that are partners frequently preen each other on the head and neck.

Looking at the mostly white bird it looks more like illness or nutrition.

Just my opinion

Thank you all by your quick answer.
Lets give you more information in order that you can help me.
- The cage is clean. It is cleaned every day.
- The humidity is less than 50%
- This is the complex vitamin https://birdcareco-shop.com/bird-su...-and-probiotic-supplements/daily-essentials1/

- The seeds mix is this one https://www.delinature.be/vogels/72-agapornis-champion/?lang=EN&srt=Grote parkieten
- White is a male and yellow is a female and they have a very good relationship and do not fight each other..
- There isn´t seeds in poop
- I´m in Portugal
- This couple was separated for 2 months to check if there would be any changes but that did not happen.

Let´s if with this additional information you can understand my problem.

Thanks in advance.

Was the vitamin complex prescribed by an avian vet? If so, for what condition? As noodles123 has stated, under or overdosing a vitamin supplement can cause more harm than good. Perhaps you could consider not using the vitamins for a while, if your birds do indeed eat a varied and nourishing diet they may not even need one.

I would also recommend a visit to your avian health care professional may be in order as soon as circumstances allow it.

In case you should decide to seek professional veterinary care...

Certified Avian Vets
https://abvp.com/animal-owners/find-an-abvp-specialist/
If none are near you...
Avian Veterinarians
http://www.aav.org/search/custom.asp?id=1803
In my opinion, any of the vets listed here should be better than a regular vet.
International contacts, too.
Or... sometimes I find a place to start just by Googling "avian veterinarian near ((your location))"

Good luck to you.

Thank you dear GaleriaGila

A Vet to this birds is difficult to find and they are very very expensive.:smile012:

I follow the recommendations of the breeders of these birds and they are the best we can find to help me with the difficulties I'm facing.

Seems this problem isn´t frequent and I have to follow some tips that I read here and breeders gave me.
I will back in a few weeks and tell what is the situation of my birds.

Thank you all. :smile049:

Thanks for your help.

For now I also got help on the internet and I am "deworming" (clean parasites) with the recommended medication.
The recovery will take a few weeks and if it is not successful I will return here to the forum with more information and request for help. :33:

Thank you so much.;)

Recommended Sufraprime da Zoopan 5 days, Stop 5 days and more 5 days. After each 5 days of Sufraprime 5 days of vitamin.

Thank you by your interest.

Might have a fungal infection mate
The first picture you shared shows one has a bit of an orangy tinge of colour inside their mouth
Might be aspergillosis or something else............I HIGHLY doubt it has anything to do with worms,...... if it was worms your birds wouldn't be sitting so bright and upright!

As hard as it is to say not knowing your financial situation: I think you better bite the bullet and take them to a vet

After 6 months I can confirm what the problem was. It was the male who plucked the female.

As a last attempt was to separate the couple and after about 2 months the female was beautiful.

I have already joined the female with another male and everything is fine with both.

What appeared to be a serious illness was, after all, an excess of "affection" from the male. :)

Thanks to everyone who tried to help me.

Thanks for the up date!! We love to learn what happened in threads like this one. Your outcome was, in the end, very simple and I am glad to learn the female is in better feather now.

Stop by once in awhile and let the board know how your flock is doing!
