I am a new Pi owner and I found this weird thing my baby does....

When he is on the couch with coverlet on to prevent him from pooping directly on it, he would tuck hisself in the corner and make him self flat and let me scratch his head, ok, that's just cute not weird. He then start to wheeze but I can tell he is not scared more like content and just relax and make the famous wheezing sound. When I stop, he would make soft noise sounds like " wee wee" like a little piggy and he refuse to come out from the corner. He tries to protest by gently biting my finger when I try to get him out of the corner. He try to barrow deeper and continue to make the same noise. I wonder if this is because he is tired because it only happens right before his bed time.
It's really cute, but since I am new to Pi world, I don't know if this means he is sick or just being a baby.

Does anyone know or experienced the same behavior from Pi baby?

I'm just curious to know and eager to learn everything about Pi. Because he is my dream come true bird and want to make sure I do everything as right as I can do.

Please give me some insight on this funny thing he does!

Thank you!

Sounds like he's trying to 'snuggle' and 'burrow' into the couch to get comfy for naptime. Merlin does this a lot but in other materials, usually the duvet. He gets all noisy with little meeps and whistles and wants his head scratched but will bite gently if we try to move him away. It is normally when he wants cuddles before sleep, or just attention for head scritches and stuff.

I wouldn't worry, sounds normal (ish :D) to me!

Hi Mayden,

Thank you! I discover today that it was in fact him trying to snuggle with me. My husband lay down on the couch and my bird Po burrowed his self under my husband's arm and then begged to be scratched. we had to scratch him for hours because each time we stopped he will make the piggy noise and begged.... That was just soooooo cute but i wasnt expecting that kind of bonding behavior yet since he just came to us less than a week ago....

Merlin /instantly/ bonded with me, so I had that type of behavior from day one ^^

He's only young isn't he, so a week is a 'long' time in his world. He's learnt who his flock is and he expects attention and cuddles!

Sounds like you have a very sweet baby, enjoy your snuggle time. :p

Keats (budgie) born Feb. 18, 2011, and Raphael (budgie) adopted July 3, 2011. Finn, a Brown-Head Poicephalus, born January 4, 2010, has also joined the family!
The aviary that my Finn came from had 4 baby Pionus that I was able to observe when I visited. They are very snuggly, especially when they're babies, and the little noises are baby noises. They are adorable :)

Hi Tamara,

I created a cuddle monster! Poe now demands cuddling and head scratches for HOURS. I was on a phone with my mother and he forcefully wiggled hisself in between my face and the phone to stop me from talking on the phone and looked at me with side eyes while making th weeeee weeeee sound.... He also gets in my way as I type on iPad and demands scratches! I'm just totally smitten! He is a monster, but devastatingly cute monster!

Kiwiwade- that is adorable that he tried to get in the way of you talking on the phone! I have had my baby pi for a few days now and he is wonderful! Very clumsy little guy that will fall off his perch every now and then! How long did it take Poe to warm up to cuddling? I have tried this with Rio and he just wants to climb my shoulder. I know not all birds like that and if he doesnt, that is just fine with me. I will love him either way.

Hi Nykia,

Rio is beautiful!! I think he is about the same as my Poe (who I found out may be a girl and was 2 months younger than I was originally told).
Poe started to ask for scratch on her 4th day with us. At fist I did not realize what she was doing, like Coral1 said she made herself flad and low and made this piggy like sound weeee weeeee and pushed my hand with her head. I eventually understood what she was asking for and from that point on, she is a cuddle monster.

Poe came from a pet shop and before I took her home I visited her at least 5-6 times and played with her 3 times, so getting cuddly early maybe because of it.

Poe also loves to climb up to my shoulder and get scratched, so maybe sit on the couch and let him climb up to your shoulder, then scratch him with back of couch behind Jim to support the clumsy baby? That's what I do with Poe because she is also really clumsy... :)

I would love to hear about your babies progress and share the new mom experience with you!

Coral1,

Good to hear 5 yrs old Marty is still doing this! I thought this maybe be just a baby thing and was all sad to imagine that she will stop doing this one day..... I hope Poe will be doing this forever!
