Re: Pixie will be here on Friday :)
I bet you're going crazy today! Best wishes for good weather and a safe flight for Pixie.
When you get her home offer her some grapes or maybe an orange slice in case she is a bit dehydrated. |

Re: Pixie will be here on Friday :)
I'm lucky I guess that Detroit is one of the hubs that is used for layovers so birds will come to me without delays. Being a baby, she should be more relaxed about the whole thing, so try not to worry. When I talked to a breeder about shipping, she eased my concerns by saying she never had a bird arrive injured or dead.
The 10pm is no fun. It doesn't give her much time to check things out before she will want to go to bed. But, if she is used to a different time zone, that will help. I know you won't suck at this ![]() She will figure out the toys. She may investigate them right away, or it may take time. But, try not to worry about that either. And like I said before, over time, you will learn what she likes the most. You got her a good variety to start. And she might ignore something for a long time and then suddenly it becomes her favorite. And some things they love as babies and then don't care as much for as adults. Is your hubby going to the airport with you? If so, one of you can drive and one of you can hold her carrier. If not, talk and sing to her on the way home. She will learn your voice and by the time you get there, hopefully she will come right out of the carrier for you. I would put her into her cage right away though unless she seems like she wants to play with you. Let her have time to check the cage out, find the food and water and toys. You might leave a night light on for her, especially that first night and maybe only cover the cage half way since she is new and it's night when she arrives. |

Re: Pixie will be here on Friday :)
Good idea about the nightlight, and yeah he is driving me there so I will be able to focus on her for the way home. It is a 45 min drive for us to town we thought it would be easier that way.
And thanks for your support ![]() |

Re: Pixie will be here on Friday :)
So excited for you! I know how you feel about the long wait for the flight. Pepper's flight didn't come in until 11pm. A very long day until it was time to leave for the airport. One thing I did to keep busy was make some bird toys.

Re: Pixie will be here on Friday :)
Yes, Merlin did have a night fright her first night about 2 minutes after I went to bed. And if you've never seen one before it will scare the heck out of you. Actually even if you've seen several it still scares the heck out of you! My BCC had one every once in awhile so at least I knew what they looked like. Her previous owners told me sometimes she had them. So I got the little dim lamp with the blue bulb from my bedroom, plugged it in next to her cage, and lifted the cover to only half way, and she has been fine ever since. The vet told me as well to keep using the night light because of her blindness. But, I bet a brand new bird coming to a new home and cage, at night, would also appreciate that.
Don't freak out though is she doesn't eat right away. Merlin really didn't, although she drank water. If she eats a grape, that will at least get something in her including fluid. All my other birds came home with me earlier in the day, and did not come by plane and did eat something that first day. Ok, actually it was evening when I got here with Rowdy, but Rowdy came in here like she was queen of the house, which doesn't usually happen. Usually they are worried when they first come to a new home. |

Re: Pixie will be here on Friday :)
Thanks for thinking of me today Audrey
![]() She won't reach the airport until about 10pm at night, apparently there is a layover in Alanta which he assures me is the norm. I know he has told me over and over he only uses Delta for shipping birds cause they take care of them but I can't help but worry. That and I am so afraid of silly things like what if she doesn't like me or what if I suck at this LOL. I never worried if my dog would but I guess because of everything I have read about Parrots I know she will make up her own mind and I can't buy her love with treats and such the same way you can a dog. I will make sure to pack an orange or so just in case it will help her relax. I am hopeful that once we get her home she will at least drink some water for me. I know I won't feel like I can breathe until I see her eat, drink and eliminate. To me that is when she is ok. Just so many things running through my head right now and it seems so surreal that my toy-filled cage that has been sitting here all ready will finally have a resident. I hope she likes it and the toys, if she doesn't know what to do with them I hope I can show her so she will enjoy them. AHHH lol it is just butterflies and crazy filled nerves here today! I'm still worried she won't like me lol! Honestly. Not to say I expect her to already. But I worry haha. I spent a good portion of my time at work wondering if I was a likable person from a bird's perspective. Then I spent more time wondering if I was crazy. I am. Best of luck! I hope the first days go smoothly for you, and the drive home. And if it is any consolation you sound as unsure and worried as me. |

Re: Pixie will be here on Friday :)
Well to make it worse her flight is like 3 hours late. I have been freaking out for awhile now. Breeder has reassured me that he gave her plenty of food and such to last for quite some time and that they always check her water and stuff but I can't help being freaked out.
I am just hoping when I call back they will tell me it finally left Alanta. I am sure its ok I just can't help but be scared. |

Re: Pixie will be here on Friday :)
Try not to get too worked up. While I didn't have any issues with Tate's flight being delayed, he did have a transfer and it was a long flight for him. When i picked him up he was just fine!! It took him a few days to get comfortable and by the third day he really pigged out and made up for not eating too much the first and second day he was home. Gradually, he got more and more comfortable and his personality started to show and he started to let me touch him and give him scratches. I'm sure it will all work out and your little Pixie will be happy to see you : )
Let us know how it goes! |
