Any recommendation for a BH pionus breeder? I found a few on bird breeders.com, but most are not making me confident. I would love to find one that abundance weans!

I believe they breed all the different birds you were interested in from your other thread.

Hmmmm. I found a Maxi. I like the look of the Blue Head better, but this Maxi seems nice and I feel comfortable with the breeder.

Anyone want to do some comparison of BH vs Maxi for me?

Ack! I am so frustrated with breeders!

They post ads, then never call or email back. There's a large breeder in So Cal, I've called her twice and emailed her once. Nothing. Over 1/2 of the breeders I've contacted never contact me back.

IF they email back, many are short and curt with their response. "No. Don't have any." Uh....can I talk to you about a waiting list? Will you be having more soon? If so, when?

They don't update their websites.

Then if I do get a breeder on the phone, they talk for 45 mins about McCaws. I don't want a McCaw! I'm not interested...can you tell me about the bird I do want?

Or, they tell me how there's no money in birds, they do this because they love them. Right there's no money in it, because even though you may love the birds, as a whole their business practices are lame.

Ok...rant over.

Baby Galah: Raime (F)
I hear you chickymonkey! I have had the same experience with breeders over the last few months and it was very frustrating! But then I found an awesome breeder who answered her ad right away, had an updated website and called me to talk about the baby I was interested in! Amazing! So that is where I purchased my baby Galah.

I didn't just write to commiserate with you though. :) I know an awesome breeder who breeds Blue Headed Pionus. I don't know if she has babies right now though. Feathered 4 Ranch in Wisconsin.

I gave up. Too hard to find a breeder :(

We're going back to the breeder we got our super cockatiel from and she's giving me first choice from her clutch of pineapple GCCs. At least I'll get to meet the babies and choose (or rather have one choose me!)

Valentino - Red Fronted Macaw - Hatched August 12, 2012
For our second parrot I am looking into a more docile laid back parrot that I know Lupe will be able to handle. She loves Valentino but I know he is a handful and Lupe can barely handle him. I have an excellent cage I bought in 2001 that is made from stainless steel that my Noble macaw lived in which would be perfect for a medium size parrot.

I admit I had wanted a Pionus for years. I love how different and unique they are and my experience with them has always been positive. Lupe's aunt in Mexico had a White cap that was not tame and because I was missing my flock I took over his care. It only took me days for Beto to become tame for me. If I was late getting up in the morning he would bang his swing against the cage and call to me. Lupe's aunt asked her why he was doing that and Lupe told me the parrot wanted me and I was late in going to him. The aunt offered him to me and I almost took him home but crossing a parrot though the international bridge is illegal and I would of had to smuggle him back into El Paso. I really was close with taking that chance because I knew they really didn't know how to take care of his needs properly but in the end smuggling him across the border was too risky and I had to pass on her kind offer.

I never forgot Beto and later learned white caps were the more feisty of the pionus family but it was so easy get him to like me. A non hand fed untame bird who only took me days for him to accept me has always been with me. Paco ended up going to live with her daughter in law's sister who kept birds. On a visit 2 years later (we go down every two years) it was requested that I visit Cynthia's sister because she wanted me to teach her all I knew about parrots. (the family knows I have kept parrots for many years and she wanted to learn more) Anyway to make this long story short I did make the visit and Maria was very thankful for answering her questions. I showed her how to clip Beto's wings (she was afraid fully flighted he would fly off) and educated her about diet (what to feed and what not to feed with that was available in their city). In the summer Beto, their amazon and a budgie couple cages would be hung from the front patio and I learned someone entered their patio and stole the amazon and Beto. Maria was heartbroken and I was very disappointed. The experience of helping Beto and all has never left me.

Fast forward to now and my want of a second parrot. I was looking into other types of mini macaws and dabbled with trying to find a Golden Conure breeder that was willing to work with me. In my research I realized locally the bird community has shrank quite a bit and there are not a lot of breeders like there use to be in the 90's. Even my favorite bird magazine "Bird Talk" stopped printing magazines and I can't seem to find any bird/parrot magazines to subscribe to anymore. Needless to say I got Valentino my RFM from out of state and he had to be shipped to me. After having a positive experience and learning how it is done properly I am now open to getting a parrot from out of state.

So hence my search for a good breeder that I am comfortable with and one with ethics and good practices. I would get another parrot from Valentino's breeder but she now only breeds the CAG, BTM and RFM and I am looking for a smaller parrot. I have also experienced the not so good customer service of breeders I was interested and it seems hard now to find a breeder that meets my standards.

I have looked into local rescues with wanting to help a parrot who needs a home but parrot rescues around here are not very good about getting back to you and it seems my want to volunteer and help out was not accepted. There is a rescue 5 hours away from us that I really like and might go through them to get my second parrot but now it is a waiting game with the season to change from winter to spring and stop having snowstorms between us.

I worry with taking in a rescue even with disease testing, vet care, and quarantine that I might still be taking a chance with bringing in disease. This whole decision of trying to add a second parrot has been very stressful. More stressful than it ever was before with meeting reputable bird people who have high standards and ethics.

Crimson,

I checked out your link for your breeder friend and I really like what I saw. I am in MN so I don't know how it would work getting a baby parrot from Canada to the US but if it could be done I would want one of her babies.

I loved the picture of her Dusky Pionus pair. Makes me giggle that she put white sheets down on the couch (probably so the parrots feathers and coloring would show more) and plunked them down on the couch for pictures. They are facing each other and look so in love....very adorable.

there are lots of excellent breeders around here, especially around the Niagara area, & London, Ont.
Guelph is near the mennonite country, and is one of my favourite places to visit, also my brother lives in Guelph.
