Just rescued an abandoned pionus. I'm new to this breed. Not sure how old this one is. Was told could be between 5-10 years old. They believe it is female.
My first thought is this bird doesn't look well. I will be trying to get her to the vet tomorrow.
I'm worried about possible egg bound or vent issues. She has a lump near her vent. I've not seen this before in any of my birds in the past.
Seems very docile, let's me scratch her head and neck already. Hasn't been trained to step up I was told. Will step onto my hand but seems a little unsteady.

Re: Newbie pious

I am so glad you are taking her into the vet. I hope they can figure out what the lump is, and that it is easy to treat. We have a tiel who has a benign tumor near her vent, and the vet decided to just keep an eye on it, but so far it hasn't grown, thank goodness.
It's hard to see in the video, but if that's rust on the cage that could be causing issues as well. I'm so glad you took this sweet girl in, please let us know how she is getting along:)

Re: Newbie pious

I'll be giving the cage a good clean tomorrow.. I know she had a traumatic day with the moving and the car rides.. So I wanted to set it up quickly so she would be able to settle in.. Her temperament is so sweet, it actually worries me. Downstairs we have a Quaker that we took in 4 months ago. He is 3years old. He is not so docile. Lovable but definitely not docile... I am quarantining this one upstairs for awhile, until I know for sure that it is safe.
This is my first pionus so I'm not certain what to expect.

Re: Newbie pious

Good idea, moving can be so stressful on them. Quarantining is a great idea:)
We have a WCP, and she is really laid back. Our BHP is a ball of energy. I hope it is just her personality and that there is nothing wrong. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.
Does she have a name?

I haven't thought of a name for her. The person I got her from didn't know very much at all. From what I've gathered, previous owner may have had ahlzeimers or similar issues. She looks like her health was neglected. Weight seems good, feathers are a little dull looking. Hopefully she is molting. I haven't found a vet that will see her yet today. May need to wait till next week.
For some reason I have a feeling she hasn't been offered a bath for a long time. So I'm trying to do that now. She isn't stepping up for me today at all so I'm gonna do what I can. I don't want to stress her out too much

Re: Newbie pious

I hope she enjoys her bath! That will make her feel better for sure if she has gone a long time without one.
Our Pis go crazy for a bath when they hear the vacuum, or when I play a rainstorm video from Youtube.
Looking forward to hearing what you name her!

Re: Newbie pious

New sounds this morning. I'm not certain if it's just bird babble or if she imitating a noise from her previous life...

Re: Newbie pious

That new noise is the sound of sexual solicitation. Notice also the lowered body posture and slightly extended wings. My BWP female, Peggy, who is eight years old, goes through this for about a month every year--only when in visual contact with me. She can keep it up for hours. In my experience, you just have to wait for her hormones to subside, and the "organ grinder" chant will stop. In the meantime, don't touch her too much, because you don't want to add any stimulation.

I almost considered introducing Peggy to a male owned by a friend of mine this year, but I'm not sure I want to get into breeding pionus, so I'm just letting her chill out. But we are into the second week now, and I'm feeling sorry for her, so who knows?

My Pisces does this as well when she is hormonal, which is unfortunately way too often.

I don't believe Peggy's breeder is still breeding BWP. I lost touch with her several years ago and don't see her in any pionus ads or sites any more. Sorry! They are hard to find. Too bad--such beautiful and sweet birds (when not in heat).

Do you belong to the pionus FB group? They might have leads . . . .Jeff

Search Pionus Parrot Lovers Group on Facebook. It's a closed group so you have to request to join. It takes a long time for them to answer . . . a week to ten days at least. Good luck!

Wow my heart breaks that this poor girl has to go thru the trauma of being rehomed. And also has some health issues. Did you find out what is going on?

I am so glad u took her in and are trying 2 help her and do all the right things by her. I really hope & pray she's ok and can live out a wonderful life with u.

I don't want to needlessly worry you but that tumor looks similar to what my mom's CAG had and she ended up having ovarian cancer.

My best wishes and hopes r sent her & your way. Please update us when u can.
