Hellooo all. I'm used to seeing my budgie's molt and know why they're itchy around X time and I can see on their heads etc. that they're molting.

But Merlin is just... scratching his head like mad. I'm going to treat him for mites (which I'm almost certain he doesn't have... but no harm in being cautious!).

He is about 14 weeks old and I was just wondering if anyone knew if Senegals begin to molt around this age? & if that's what the scratching could be down to?

Poor guy only had one leg to use to scratch so it's very frustrating for him. :p

He doesn't like being spritzed! Haha. I think that's the problem, he's just always dropping what he's doing to lie down and scratch so I think he might be getting some new feathers in, I'm not worried about him being- ill or anything, guess I'll just keep helping him scratch and wait it out. ;)

That sounds awfully young for a molt. Tiki didn't start really molting until after she turn 12 months old. It was more like 14-15 months old. Are you sure your bird doesn't have MITES?

but as mike said could be mites, vet visit to be sure!

Wouldn't say it feels prickly... I've just been to the vets but forgot to ask about that - I see him again next wednesday so I'll mention it to him then. I'm almost certain he doesn't have mites, but I will be mite treating him /just incase/.

Ill just keep bathing him, he has done it less since yesterday and I've soaked him a bunch more than usual :p
