Meyers or Jardin?

Hi, we had these two species reccommended to us. So I thought I'd check here and see who has one, who has had both, and your experiences with their personalities. Is one species a better talker than the others, how do they get along with multiple people? Is one in general nippier than the other?

We'd be getting a hand-fed baby if were were to get a bird, to allow it to adjust to our flavor of family. We'd plan on having two cages: one in the family room and one in a quiet side room in case the bird seemed overwhelmed by the action. (we have four kids.)

I can't speak for Jardins, but Meyers are renound for their even temperament and calm demeanor.

I keep finding conflicting information on bird species temperments on different sites. I had read several places that Jardine make great family birds and good talkers and then I read another place they really need calm and quiet.

Is this normal with parrot research? Finding conflicting information on breed temperments?

Parrots are a lot like us. Each with it's own personality. You never know what they will be like until they are in your home. I have found that what ever breed of bird a person has they will say theirs is the best. The best bet is to spend time with the bird and try to get an idea of its personality. When I bring a new bird home all my kids one at a time gets to spend time just talking with it. If you take it slow most birds don't mind kid noise.

I read about a Jardine being rather strong willed and not too too easy to train. They are the most beautiful of the African birds I think.

You seem to be putting a strong emphasis on talking ability - there's never any guarantee that a bird will talk, even if it's part of a species that has a better reputation for it. Just be prepared that a bird might never talk.

Thanks everybody! I think we are going to go with a Meyers or a Pionus. Talking ability isn't something of strong importance to us, I was just curious.

i knew someone that had a meyer's and that parrot was really smart. i saw a jardine in a shop and i wanted to take him! i love jardine parrots but it was so expensive... $1300! they are so beautiful!

They do fairly well but that is mostly because they ignore each other. I have quite a few play areas, enough for everyone to get around. The smaller birds (lovebird and small Pois) come out together and then I take my Cape out on her own, since she has quite a powerful beak and could do lots of damage, even if all she wanted to do is play.
