I'm looking at adopting a female senegal. She does not like men. Her owner said he's had her since she was weaned 5 years ago. But he can't hold her. His wife can tho.

I have a conure and a lovebird. What do I need to know before getting her? What if I can't handle her? Is 5 years too old to tame her etc. please let me know. Diet, etc.

Senegals have a bit of a reputation of being aggressive to other birds. Most of the anecdotes I've heard about birds injuring other birds have involved a Senegal, so there may be some truth to it, although "the plural of anecdote is not proof". Still, if you adopt her I'd suggest planning to very closely supervise her any time she might have access to the other birds or their cages. I'm sure others here have more real experience with them.

I do have a Cape, but they seem very different from Senegals!

My friend in NC has a Yellow peach faced lovebird who loves my senegal and spend alot of time preening him and I think I've told the story before of how her preening him led to my getting bit but every bird is different and no 5 is not to old to train or tame a bird.

Well I ended up picking her up this evening. You won't believe this but he asked if we had anything for trade. Which we auction and always have a ton of stuff. I traded 4 old fishing poles, an old Electiric drill that has a rusty tip. And some Clinique face moisturizer.

He was told she was 5. He's only had her for 3 months. She wouldn't breed with his male Senegal so he didn't have use for her. This poor baby has landed her third home in 3 months. She is gorgeous.

She looks to have some beak flaking, which I'm assuming is because 1. He's fed her what the original owner fed her which is large parrot seed mix. No fruits or veggies, legumes, nothing. Also she has 2. Wooden dowel perches. That's it. Her cage has got to just big enough for 1 budgie. I swear it's about 24"x24"x18.

I plan on leaving her in there until tomorrow. I am going to move her into one of the larger cages I have mysteriously accumulated. Lol. She should be much happier. Other than the small cage and reforming issues she seems so sweet. Like she just needs some attention.

When I was there her owner couldn't get near her, she's scream and flap around in her cage, so I payed my hand over the opening of the cage and let it hang there for a few mins. I then moved closer ever so slowly, she never yelled or opened her beak. So I left it at that. When we got home I put her in quarantine in my bedroom, on the dresser. I fed her and placed some banana chips in there for her since it's too late for veggies. She assumed I wanted her so she stepped right up. She won't let me pet her but she did step up for me. Without me even trying. I have hope that she will be a great new addition to our flock!!

aww thanks for saving her! sounds like the previous owner may have scared her. it's pretty funny what you traded the bird for. i'm sure she will be much happier with you. good luck with her!

Beautiful! I'll be in the market for another parrot in 6 to 8 months and I was originally looking at IRN's but the last several days I've become very interred with Senegal's. Congrats on your new baby!

By the way... Some senegals do have very bad reputations with other birds. Oliver actually bit Bella's whole toenail off. I hate to be negative but be careful if you let her out with your others. Lots of sennies do not exactly make friends... Maybe some do, but I've actually never seen a bird-friendly senegal. Then again I've met very little senegals. ;) Well I have seen Kili the senegal behave good around Truman the cape parrot, check out their youtube channel, think its called kiliparrot. ;p Lol sorry got off topic.

congrats :) an its normal for a sene's beak to be flakey from time to time

she is beautiful

but please be aware of how agressive these little birds can be, if nut looked at me like yours did on the 2nd pic i'd know to back off, as that is a classic nut, pre launch attack stance, especially when i am pointing my phone at her to take pics lol
