$500.00 for a Meyers is a bit expensive even with the cage. You can find them in my area all day long and trice on Sunday for $350.00-$400.00 and that is a weaned baby from a breeder. They are quite similar to Senegal parrots but with a little nicer personality. But the couple that I have been around weren't all that friendly.

I'm in the Chicago area and when we purchased our two Meyer's (one 10 years ago and the other 8 years ago) the going rate was $450. So that price with a cage seems fair to me. Hopefully it is a decent cage, if it's too small or damaged and you need to buy a new cage soon then I would negotiate that price down $150 or so.

We love our two Meyer's. We do find them to be a bit louder than what others will say about them. For instance they are usually referred to as good condo birds because they aren't too loud. I would argue that and am glad we are in a single family home because for at least a few hours a day they like to let loose and get kind of loud!

I'd love a Meyers to add to my flock. I'm yet to come across a breeder of Meyers yet in the UK that is nearby.

But from what I know of them, they are similar to senegals, but the quieter/laid back/friendlier version.

HOWEVER; Each bird varies and I don't want to be promising you a sweet little angel when you could end up with a demon from hell itself!

Meyers are supposed to be quite relaxed and not so uptight compared to their cousins in the Poi family. They're less likely to bond to a singular person (unlike a senegal, who is known as a one person bird) making them more suited to families. Since you have a cockatiel, I'm warning you, birds like Sennies and Meyers may only have small beaks, but they certainly pack a punch and they WILL. They are known as apartment birds because they are quietER than most parrots. This by no means makes them a quiet bird. I fret over our neighbours voicing a complaint about Merlin soon. After a year of living here, so far it hasn't happened yet, but still waiting...

Poi's are easily spooked, they need to be socialised (just like any other animal) but they need it so regular and often so they do not freak out at the slightest of things.

I would also think that Meyers are 'less likely' to be as jealous and aggressive over the fact that you have another bird to tend to. Compared, again, to it's cousins.

Meyers are lovely little chaps (usually!) and I'd whole heartedly recommend one over a senegal haha! The price does seem fairly steep for an adult, but it depends on how the birds condition is, the cage, the toys etc. You might end up with a wonderful older bird who you don't have to train half as much as a new baby ;)

Thanks! If they have it I may offer $400 and see if they go for that. I'm still trying to decide on that or a baby conure. Thanks again for the help!

I loved my Meyers, but he was a crotchety, fussy little thing. He bonded with my husband and did not warm to me. Seemed smart, vocal, ton of personality, but ours was aggressive and dominant. Do miss him though. Made great noises.

I just got my baby Meyers a little over a month ago. I was between a green cheek and her, but obviously ended up with my Tukki.

I paid $650 for her. Yeah... it's a lot. But she's a baby, and the price included a full vet check with dna testing, a big bag of seeds (once she's done with that I'll start switching her to pellets), a few toys, and free grooming for life.

She's been lovely so far! She's playful, loves to climb around, steps up really really good, loves to hang out with me (gets a little anxious though when I'm not in the same room with her), but she is also very good at entertaining herself. Whenever I have people over I have them hold her to get her use to others, and she is pretty good with them. Compared to my amazon, who is a little chicken bird, she is fearless!

Coming from a family with a macaw and an amazon I think she is very quiet (but of course that's in comparison. She can still be a little chatter box!). I do live in an apartment and there haven't been any complaints from the neighbors so far! Honestly her tweets sorta blend in with the birds outside. Ok. Maybe a little louder... and she has one really annoying squeak, but she doesn't do it too often.

She isn't very cuddly though, doesn't let me pet or scratch her head, but then again I've only had her for a very short amount of time. Pois in general aren't known for being super cuddly. Although I hope that as she gets more comfortable with me and trusts me more she will allow some scratches!

She does give me kisses though and makes cute little kissy sounds!

I don't have much experience with green cheeks, so I can't really compare. But my month with Tukki has been great so far and I'm very happy with my decision.

The guy texted me today trying to sell me his Meyers parrot with cage for $500, if he came back and asked $400 for the whole thing, would that be a good deal?

Have you not heard? The bird is the word!
