Senegals with other bird species

I have a very balanced and easygoing 6 month old Senegal and am considering adopting a disabled GCC who will need to be caged most of the time. If I adopt this other bird I have no intention of allowing the two to come in direct contact out of their cages, but the admin on another parrot forum has informed me that I should probably not even keep the cages in the same room because Senegals are very jealous and can become vicious because of it. My avian vet didn't mention this as a serious concern so I'd be interested to hear feedback from Senegal owners in multiple bird households about their experiences.

How do your Senegals seem to feel about the rest of your flock? What do you do to make things harmonious?

My 7 month old Senegal doesn't mind my Parrotlet, it's my Parrotlet who is insanely jealous of my Sennie. So o figure. At least with a GCC they are more evenly matched in size. I know my Sennie could take out my Parrotlet in a second, wish Kiwi the P'let knew that.

I have a VERY jealous Senegal, Demon. He gets along fine with my other birds on the stands and cage tops. When I am training him, the TAG and the Zon, they stand on one play pen and do great . Only when the grey tried to steal his turn did I see any hissing and it was short lived. I know of at least one rescue where all the birds are in a room free flighted and they seem to do fine.

Just about any bird can be jealous of another bird, just depends on the individual bird. As long as your spending time with each individual bird I don't see a problem. But at the beginning I would suggest keeping them as far apart as possible to do quarantine.

My first Senegal was an extremely lovable and mellow bird. Loved people and go to anyone. Imagine my surprise when circumstances put me and her in a room with some other birds and she went quite jealous of them. I didn't allow contact but she tried to stalk them.

Now, my current Sennie will kill, crush and destroy any other bird that gets near him. Both of my Blue Crowns are quite cautious of him even though they are bigger. One made the mistake of landing on his cage and he literally launched himself at Rosco and tackled him. Grabbed on and both tumbled off the cage and hit the floor where Sidney was still on the attack til Rosco got away and flew off. No damage, fortunately.

As Mikey said above, they are all individuals. But Senegals do have a reputation of being somewhat intolerant of other birds.

Safari my Senegal came here with plenty of birds, conures, cockatiels, lovebirds,& canaries at about 7 months of age
It took him about 5 months to realize none of them were going to hurt him. He would lung and bite them if they got too close, but did not go after them.
Now, Safari lets any bird in his cage, even when he is in there!, that to me is truly amazing considering he would have eaten all of my birds given the chance.

It may take a while, but it should work out.
they only thing I caution you about is Senegals do like to crawl on other birds cages, so you should protect the gcc toes.
Above all make sure your senegal does not learn how to open your gcc's cage, put a clip or lock on it if you have to.
