Griffin Talks!!

This morning while he was still under his cage cover, I heard a little "hi" and "good boy"... among the other soft chattering and peeps that he does. I was so excited!

I 'thought' that when I first got him at 3 1/2 months old I heard "hi" a couple times, but it was just a small, quiet, short hi, so it was a bit ambiguous. I thought to myself, wait did he just say.... Nah. Couldn't be. He never said anything for months until today. He's a little over 9 months old.

I've been told Poicephalus usually start talking later than many other species. I've had Robin the other Poi for so long, that I honestly can't remember how old he was or any recollection about him first talking. I think the majority of males in the Poicehphalus genus talk to some extent, but I just wasn't sure if Griffin was going to or not.

How exciting!! I remember how excited I was when I heard Loco say "Whatchadoin".. lol, I think I did a double take

Yaayyy Griffin, clever boy! That's so exciting, Julie. My birds do their practicing when no one is in the room. Did Griffin learn, "good boy", from you or from Robin?

I'm not sure how good of a talker Griffin will become. Doesn't matter, but I'm kind of curious. Related species Robin says several things, but the majority of his mimicking is sounds. Although most male Poi's talk, they're known to have a fairly limited vocabulary. I think there is a Senegal on YouTube if I remember, who is a super talented talker, but that's not the usual for Poi's.

Allee, Robin and his close friend Raven both say good boy, but I'm thinking he either picked it up from me saying it, or from Raven. Raven says it much more often than Robin. He shouldn't though... As Raven's hormones set in, he's being less and less of a good boy these days!

Haha I wouldn't be holding your breath for that one ! I don't think he's a species known for being that impressive with talking lol.

What's interesting is Griffin's 'speaking voice' is very different from Robin's. It's more of a cute little babyish voice just like his babyish peeps and squeaks (he's SO darn cute)!! Whereas Robin has a low voice like a male robotic voice for some reason. Back when he learned to talk, he didn't live with a man... Maybe that's just the Red Bellied 'voice' lol idk.

We need video, we need to see the little star impressing us all!

I know what you mean, the minute the camera comes out, they stop and stare at you. You'd need to set up a full-time "griffin-cam"

I think so lol. He IS the funniest guy I have. He's even funny when he's not trying to be. I love it how he sits with his legs far apart and feet turned outward. I think my feet sort of turn out when I walk... He's the perfect parrot for me LOL!!

Probably did ballet in a former life....

They are always fun when they get a talking their first words. My grey and Amazon have been picking things up from TV when we have TV time. We were watching some HBO movie and didn't think they'd be watching or picking up swear words....Now my Grey says " Awwww Sh** ! " when it accidently drops a top on floor from it's cage. My wife and I rolled on the floor laughing. Now he says it when I say bed time,,,,,funny, but a bit annoying too.
He has quite a list of sentences he says for being 18 months old, such as.." hey what are you doing Boo Boo", " I want yum yum" , "No, I don't like it" ..Are you going bye bye?, "I love you".... " "Did you see the bird out side"......."get my ball, my ball"...
"Want to cuddle, tickle tickle"....and mimics a variety of many different sounds, like slurping, smaking lips then saying ahhhhh. Knows many commands, such as show me your wings, he'll spread them and go wooooooo. Let's dance, and he'll start dancing up a storm. Ask him if he likes something and he'll bob his head up and down saying yes. Smart bird, can take a ball and put it in a cup, we play basket ball, table top style. He's mastered the peanut holder, where you put a peanut in, and they have to turn the knob just right then open the drawer to get peanut....3 seconds and he has it out that quick.

Those Greys are SCARY SMART!!! They way they can speak in context which when you think about it really takes some beyond basic thought process. It really blows my mind. Funny how he KNOWS when to use the swear words too LOL! I love hearing Greys talk, they're so clear and human-like.

That's it, they think things out first before they say it. They don't just mimic. And they know the tone to use too, and can vary it. It blows my mind as well. They remember things and how to do it. They study your face, and emotions...they actually pick up on sadness, which really blows my mind. Tell you what happen a couple nights ago.

My wife and I were watching one of those BOO HOO Christmas movies and my wife had a tear run down her face. Grayson ( My gray) is very observant and walked down off my knee, across the lamp table on to the couch up her arm and stood on her shoulder next to her face. My wife said " what do you want grey" and he lifted his foot and softly placed it on her face where the tear was. It was priceless to see.

I've always read that Greys not only have the Intelligence of a 4 to 6 year old human, but also have the emotional level of a 2 to 4 year old. I never seen the emotional level of a parrot on this level before and it's truly amazing. He's such a good boy. My Amazon is quite intelligent for going on 8 years old. And Also has quite an emotional level, though nothing like the grey.

Nothing short of amazing! Yeah, personally I think I might feel a bit 'uncomfortable' with a bird who is THAT smart... I'd always wonder what it was thinking when it was looking at me haha.

So I was "talking" with Raven the Pionus tonight... He prefers not to be the hands on type with me, so I just stood by him and talked. I think he might be getting even better at talking. He's already my best talker, but until recently, he never would repeat immediately what I would say. Tonight for the first time I said "what are you doing?" and he immediately repeated kind of a slurred but still distinct enough "whatyoudoing" . I was asking him referring to his 'fluffy head' he always seems to have nowadays since hormones are just starting to come into his system... He's really getting territorial and more crotchety than ever. Ah, male Pionus... Sort of like male small Amazon... *sigh* my little boy is growing up. I decided to heed the fluffy head and keep my fingers away!
