Maxwell, my precious Sennie, 2 years old.

Sunny, my baby budgie. 5ish months old.
A few questions from a new parront..

I have a 2 year old Senegal named Maxwell and I'm new to owning birdys. I have a few questions...

1) Why does he keep wagging his tail feathers and fluffing up?!

2) When he's in his cage he refuses to sleep until I bring him out, then he will sleep on my shoulder... ?????

3) He doesn't really like when I touch his head and sometimes even snaps at me when I touch it. Is this common?
He only likes to be pet on his back or under his wings, but I'm nervous because I don't want to um.. stimulate him too much.

4) He is constantly "quivering" his wings when he is on my hand, lifting them off his body just slightly and then putting them down again, and wagging his tail. Why does he do this and should I be concerned?

5) He's always mumbling. It sounds almost like a record player going too fast. Its very quiet, and he rarely makes any noise except for this one.. Is that normal? What is he doing when he mutters like that?

Thank you!!!! I just want the best for my lil buddy :rainbow1:

Re: A few questions from a new parront..

Hello Ally and Maxwell :)

1.) Wagging following by fluffing up is likely an indication he's happy. If he "wags" his tail after a particular interaction that wasn't so positive, it can indicate frustration.

2.) He likely doesn't have anywhere he feels safe. Does he have any high perches that he can comfortably grip and is somewhat hidden? They're prey animals and will not sleep completely unless they feel comfortable in their surroundings. Or, he may just sleep on and off and prefer to nap with you.

3.) Yes, you may be approaching him too quickly and haven't built up enough trust quite yet. Once again, as prey animals they don't like anything that might be coming for their throat and may be perceived as a threat. There's lots of threads on here about trust building to look into.

4.) Probably stretching out and getting comfortable. Has he had a chance to exercise his wings? He may also feel pent up.

5.) He's simply being a bird. They're vocal creatures, but it doesn't mean they have to be loud.

Hope this helps a little and that others with Poi's chime in with their experience.
