So, I drove up to DE yesterday to pick up baby. Her original owner was dealing with a relocation issue, and a topic ended up here on the rehoming forums through acquaintances of hers. Long story short, we talked a bit, and the pieces just happened to fall in place.

Baby is a 21 year old senegal, she isn't much for talking but she has her sound affects out the wazoo. When I went to pick her up yesterday, her owner had told me the last couple to look at baby ended up getting attacked (baby flew for their faces to bite their lips) so I figured when I got home with her I'd be in for a nice little nip getting her back in to her real cage. instead surprisingly enough she came right out of her carrier and up on to my hand.

This morning, I went to let her out and she happily came right out for me, very interested to see the new surroundings, and happily rode around on my shoulder for half an hour taking in the house scenery. She also had to taste test everyone elses water before I was allowed to put their dishes back in their cages. (every time i filled a bowl, she would run down my shoulder, take a drink, and run back up, it was too cute)

She still won't let us pet her at all, but luckily she is very good with vocal warnings, we haven't even had an attempted nip yet. She just gives us a growl if we try. All in all I'm super impressed with how well she is dealing with the transition so far, I didn't expect her to want anything to do with us for at least another several days.

Also, in a bit of a bitter sweet way, it was really touching to see this lady having to rehome baby. We all see tons of rehomes, heck, all you have to do is take a look on craigslist, and most of the time, it really does seem like nothing but a business transaction. It's not my place to go giving out Baby's original owners life story, but needless to say she had a very legitimate (and outside of her control) reason that really forced her hand. By the time I was pulling out of the driveway, she was in tears. It broke my heart to see her have to be seperated from baby, but it was also kind of heartwarming to see the kind of love she had for her. I made sure she realized if her situation got back on track, all she had to do was let me know and I would be happy to reunite them both. I really hope something works out that allows her to change her situation and she is able to get Baby back some day.

Anyway, as the topic says here are a few quick pictures I was able to grab. I look kinda crazy, my left eyelid is infected so I have a bit of a hunchback of notre-dom look going on right now, Baby however is adorable :D.

Chris, this post made my day! The previous owner could not possibly have found a better place for Baby. She is gorgeous!!! (You look just fine too, I would have thought you were winking at us!)
It sounds like Baby knows she is in a good, safe place, and I am so happy for you all. Kudos to you for making that long drive to make this happen:)

Verrrrry cute!
And the bird is also good-looking. Truly looks not a day over 1-2 to me!
Great, happy ending. Or happy BEGINNING!

Looks like your new house guest is a good judge of character, Chris! I'm glad you didn't get the face-strafing treatment.

I just want to say that I think it's great that you not only stepped in to give this bird a desperately needed home, but you've even allowed for the option of her original owner to take her back if she one day finds herself in the position to do so. Your actions speak loudly as to your character.

Looking forward to more updates!

Chris, you are da man!! So awesome of you to make the drive and re-home that beautiful bird. Just as wonderful to have such empathy with the poor woman forced to part ways.

Now take care of your eye!!

Chris, you were already high on my hero list for taking in wayward Toos! I'm not at all surprised by your recent act of kindness but I am very touched! Bravo, what a wonderful thing to do for the bird and the owner. No matter how it works out, everyone obviously has the bird's best interest at heart just as it should be.

Thanks everyone for the kind words, yall are too kind. DE is only 4 hours away, so it wasn't like I had to do anything too crazy to make everything work out, just a case of fortunate enough circumstances.

@Anansi: Every once in a while I figure I have to do at least a little something to counter all the things that speak less loudy for my character :D

@scott: I swear if there was a record for the most sty's a single person managed to get over the course of a year, I would take gold, silver, and bronze. I started wearing contacts a few months ago, and ever since I get them constantly. I blame the birds, between the 3 big ones there is just perpetual dust in the air, i'm pretty sure it gets on my contacts and that's what keeps causing the issues. I'll be fine, then wake up and randomly "hey, how come everything is so squinty this morning..." They are never very bad, they just make me look all lopsided. lol

I wore contacts for many years, but never could sleep in them, even the ultra-thin "30 day" types. Assume you are wearing them at while sleeping? If so, I would HIGHLY recommend not doing so and see how you do. The advertising makes them so convenient, but not sure that is the safest thing to do.

Nope, I have specifically not sleep in contacts, so i've only slept in mine once or twice on accident. I just think i keep getting micro-debre on my lenses, and it gets my eye so irritated that by the time I go to bed the damage has set in.

Welcome to Parrot Forums, Paula! I'm so sorry you had to part with your beautiful sennie. I can only imagine how terribly difficult that was for you. But you couldn't have found a better foster home for her. I'm glad to see she's adjusting so well.

I absolutely don't mind at all, I think it's a great way for us to keep connected, I hardly ever touch face-book unless I have to, but I'm always on here.

I couldn't give her a squeeze for you quite yet, But we have progressed to the point that I was at least able to give her some head scratches for you!
Actually just had that breakthrough a little while ago.

She seems to have decided that my shoulder is the safe place in this strange new land, and that wherever my shoulder goes, she needs to go. So this evening we've been spending some time trying to work on getting her to step up on to our hands. Which pretty much always just resulted in her ignoring the hand, flying back to my shoulder, me making her step back on top of the cage, rinse and repeat. Well, one time I put my hand up, and instead of ignoring it and going back to my shoulder, she rubbed her head up against my hand instead, and since then has been quite content to let me and kember scratch her head. Of course, she still won't step up on to my hand unless it is from inside the cage, everywhere else it's straight to the shoulder lol.

So far, she is being really sweet, and absolutely amazing at letting me know how she feels through body language. She has been great at "telling" me when she isn't a fan of something before it gets to the point she feels a need to bite.

So, actually I don't get to the Parrot Forums as often as I used to, but when I heard about Baby & spoke with Paula, I asked her if I could spread the word - and came here to the Adoptions forum. I've adopted 3 parrots from here & so I KNOW they can have a happy ending. In fact, 5 years later, I am still in touch [via Facebook] with the folks who placed a Grey with us after her original human passed.

So, Chris, knowing you'd picked her up, I came back to see if there are any pictures & lo & behold - not only pictures, but Paula, too! Which means I don't have to message Paula to ask if she is ready to see Baby's pictures.

I just love a story with a happy ending!

Kim

Chris, I loved reading this thread :). Baby is such a cute girl. Or should I say mature woman? I wonder if Robin will develop a crush? He's a boy Poicephalus around her age ;). It's great that she's taken to you so readily, and was instantly your buddy!

Hi Paula, and welcome to the forum :). I feel for you, and I wish you all the best. You can be rest assured that Baby is in good hands.
