Will 1" bar spacing be OK for my Jardine parrot?

So I finally got my cage in today and got it set up when it hit me. Those bars... we're spaced offly far apart... petco didn't list the bar spacing, or if they did I didn't see it. Total brain farther on my part and now I'm a bit concerned.

I see your concern, but imho, I think it should be fine. The reason I say this is... Griffin would come over and play in Raven's old cage daily, and it was a 1" spacing. Griffin my Ruppells parrot is a much smaller Poicephalus than a Jardines, and in fact as an individual he's smaller than most of the small Poicephalus. He'd put his head right up to the bars, and I remember taking notice that his head was too wide to get caught.

OK phew. It's good to have a fellow poi owner chime in. I was face planting on my desk going "oh god please dont make me take the cage apart and return this one, its so perfect fffffff!!!!". Lol ive had enough issues with getting a bird cage to last me forever.

A general rule of thumb is that the cage spacing not be greater than the inside distance between your specific parrot's eyes. That measurement just places the Parrot's skull hard against the bars and would not allow them to force their head between the bars. Slightly wider and the head can be forced between the bars.

I have always targeted a inside measurement between the bars of 3/4" (19 mm) for my Amazons. With that spacing size, there is never a question, even if a few bars become bent.

I make no judgement on your choice, just be sure to measure the spacing!

Although 3/4 is ideal, as the above 2 posters have said (Steven even prefers 3/4 for Amazons) and I agree... I know a Jardine's head not even including the eyeballs sticking out at the sides is well over an inch wide. Gently put her head up to the bars so you can see for yourself how it measures up. That is what is ultimately going to make you most comfortable with the decision. Actually seeing Jardy's head in relation to the bars.

I think that purely based on looks though, the larger cages with 1" spacing "look" better with a larger bird inside. But since you just got the cage already, safety wise, I'd personally be okay with it for a normal sized Jardine's parrot. Those Pois have big heads

Yaaa, they do have big heads!

For the OP, please understand that when I use the term Amazons, I have to take into account a much wider cross-section of skull sizes within the Family Amazona. Hence, with the biggest Amazons it just its a bit over kill, but with the smaller Amazons 3/4" (19mm) it just the right size.

My Good Friend RavenGryf has stated it so very well. At the end of the day, you need to develop that comfort level!!!

yeah I'll just have to see how big her head is next to the bars. I don't have her yet, which makes it a bit harder LOL, but hopefully next week I can pick her up.
