Reputable Jardine's Breeders?

Hi guys;

I have a decent amount of experience handling and caring for medium/large parrots and I always promised myself that I would eventually get one bird... I am leaning very strongly toward buying a Lesser Jardine's, but it seems like no-one is breeding them! I spent hours scouring the internet and found maybe one or two reputable US breeders. I reached out to African Queen Aviaries and they said that they're not sure if their Jardines will even be breeding this year because of all the disruption from the hurricane... Heartbreaking. :( I asked to be waitlisted in case anything changes, but in the meanwhile I figured I'd reach out.

Does anyone know of other reputable breeders of Jardine's parrots in the US? I'm based in NY, but I would be happy to work with a reputable breeder that ships. I am trying to decide if I'm willing to wait as long as it takes to end up with a Jardine. I'm not in a huge rush (in fact I would take a little while to think about it even if one were immediately available), but I'd like to have the information if anyone is out there / get on a waiting list.

Thanks!

Aside: also, a little additional color on "why a Jardine's specifically" that I didn't want up at the top of the post since it wasn't directly relevant: when I was in my teens my mom had chronic fatigue and owned many birds that I did most of the caring for (a CAG, a timneh, umbrella, lesser sulfur-crested, goffin, yellow-naped amazon, some mustache parakeets, a couple of lovebirds, and the lesser jardine's). She also worked part-time at a bird store where they hand-fed and raised babies of many kinds, and I regularly volunteered to help (and met baby birds & adults of various species that were being rehomed or boarded) there.

While I was at college she developed severe asthma and had to rehome all of her birds including (WITHOUT WARNING) the beloved Jardine. :mad: It broke my heart and I always swore to myself that once I was in the right financial/life position I would get (JUST ONE) bird.

Anyway, I feel like Jardines are the R2D2 of companion parrots - they may not produce a lot of words but they're so engaged, communicative, independent, spunky, and entertaining (not to mention their actual R2D2-style beeps and growls). I'm an apartment dweller (in an old building with thick walls, thank god) so it also helps that they're "quiet" (for a bird - I know). I also admit to a nigh-fatal weakness for birds that like to hop, dangle, and wrestle around on their backs, and the only other species I've played with that's more prone to that kind of behavior is caiques, who I am in love with but also fear as birdie sociopaths. :D It also helps that I feel like a Jardine's will be a little better off alone during the day while I'm at work than some other species would be (I have plenty of time to spend with a bird in the evening).

Anyway, if anyone knows of a reputable breeder for / shop selling Jardine's, please let me know! :green1::green1::green1:

Update in case anyone ever stumbles over this thread looking for a Jardine and finds it helpful - I have reached out to JC Aviary in Austin, TX as it seems like they were actively raising baby lesser Jardines as recently as this last July and they have overwhelmingly positive reviews (I hope it's ok to post links... I looked through the FAQ and "welcome" PMs and didn't see anything forbidding it). We'll see what they have to say!

Update, again for posterity: JC Aviary and African Queen both still breed Jardines.

I'm leaning toward it, but it sounds like it's going to be a few months before they have babies available so I have time to think about it.

I'm pretty sure it's a Jardine or nothing for me - they're almost everything I love about birds in one charming little animal. Only amazons can compete for my love, and they're not a great fit for my lifestyle (too big and too loud).

Better to wait on the species you want for sure, I hope the wait isn't too long!

Thanks, Terry!

My only real worry is that I've never had a bird before who I didn't have a chance to interact with before taking them home (and sometimes even participate in handfeeding) - whereas it seems like I'm going to need to work with an out of town breeder in this case. But they get overwhelmingly positive feedback on the temperaments of their babies so it seems like some really good handfeeding and socialization is going on.

Jardines is on my list too. I fell head over heels for one at a parrot shop locally. I really had to exercise some restraint to not plop down the cash and bring that little ball of personality home. I ended up with Mali, a Meyers (possible hybrid) instead and she reminds me so much of the Jardines so I’m quite thrilled. JC Aviary is wonderful. I hope you find your perfect baby soon!

It sounds like you have found a great breeder! I have a friend who breeds caiques, and sometimes they are shipped to people who didn't get a chance to meet them. From what I've heard, they have all been thrilled with the babies as she also does a wonderful job at socializing them. I hope this will be the same for you:)
