Senegal and Cat??

Okay so heres the thing...
I really want a senegal, but I have 2 cats...? One is a successful hunter, the other...not so much. But I think they would both stare at the bird and freak her out? Has anyone had any experience with birds and cats living in harmony? I don't want the bird to be stressed out constantly. There is the option of having her in another room, but then she wouldn't be as close to all the people (more secluded-behind closed door)??Help??

Re: Senegal and Cat??

I have a cat but I keep my birds in a seperate room with the door closed. i have my brothers in there and we have a tv and a bunch of toys to play with and we leave them out all day usually except for night time. If you have another bird put it in the room with it. Thats the best I can give. Good luck

Re: Senegal and Cat??

I have a very laid back Maine Coon kitty that is intimidated by the bird but at the same time she can be curious too. They seem to tolerate eachother but I never let them together with my bird out of the cage without my supervision. If you cat is a hunter then I would be weary.

Re: Senegal and Cat??

our cat will sometime get into the bird room but she has gotten in enough that she kind of realizes that she can't geth the birds so she just sits on the floor and watches them hope around in the cage and have fun. She is declawed in the front as well so she can't hurt them through the bars but yea once your cats realize they can't get the bird they will give up after a while. I hope this helps.

Re: Senegal and Cat??

I have both a cat and 2 birds in the house, Cody being in the living room. My cat Mittens gets curious and will sometimes approach his cage, but after being scolded enough she stops doing it after a while. No matter how much she learns to ignore his cage, I never, EVER, would trust her with Cody outside of his cage! When Cody comes out, Mittens goes up. She gets put in either the bathroom or my brother's room. There will never be any exceptions. I've seen what she does to mice, and all I think of is that being my little Cody!!

I would STRONGLY advise against you ever having them out together. If he's in the cage, fine, but never have them out together. Birds and cats don't mix! That's like having rodents out around a terrier...

Also be careful of pasterella as well! I would not let your cats hang around the cage either (risk of transmitting it if they lick them through the bars/knick them with a claw, etc. Bad, bad, bad )

Even if a bird and cat get along (which does happen), I wouldn't take the risk of transmitting Pasteurella. Not worth the risk to me.

Re: Senegal and Cat??

Thanks for the advice everyone. I guess it really depends on you own bird's personality and how they react to the cat..
