oh found another food nut likes to chew, well she kinda helped herself, i know she can have a little chicken every now an again, (i only ever give her tiny tit bits of meat, as i think she will get her protein from seeds/nuts and beans she gets)
but today she was rather sneaky an took a bone of my plate, which she nibbled at with the whole eye flashing thing going on, so i left her to it, but kept a close eye on her, she picked of the bone but ate the marrow, i know marrow is fattening, so less nuts an seeds for her tomorrow lol

my question is can she choke on the bone?? and is there a better type of bone for her to chew on??

sorry for all the questions, but i really want to avoid anything that can lead to anything serious

I give my bird chicken wing bones with meat on the bone and have not had any choking episodes.

Oh I forgot to tell you they like to eat the bone marrow so do not be surprised to see much of the head of the bone destroyed.

I've wondered about chicken and turkey bones as well. I did give Fred both, but then wondered about bone shards. I know that dogs can't have them for that reason. I deny Fred bones now, because I'm not sure....

i was worried about splintering, so i watched nut, but as soon as she'd eaten soft ends an peeled a little of the bone back, she dropped it.

as for raw?? i'd be to worried about giving her an upset tummy?

also was thinking of goin to the butchers for some bones i can roast up and use as a chew toy for her?? for when we are not in?? she don't generally play with her toys and only shreds the kabob one when she is stressed :( or worse chew/pluck her feathers?? would rib bones be a danger??

Triordan was referring to dogs not parrots.;)

My girl loves chewing on bones and it only happens around the table while we eat. I dont give it to her unsupervised, not that I think something will happen, I just regard it as a treat while she is with us.

I have given her rib bones before and she only ate the tiny pieces of meat off and left the bone.

Why dont you post a photo of your set-up then we can maybe see if we can help with suggestions for toys etc. that will keep her busy.My girl does not play with ANY of her toys that are not for foraging. We took her wooden swings etc. and drilled holes in where we now place treats and it keeps her busy for long because it is hard to get.

Linky do you remember, at the braai, how Mishka chewed the T-Bone bone for ages, and how he enjoyed it.
I also only give Mishka bones, when we are present, never un supervised.
My little boy loves chicken bones, but T-bones are his favourite.

You just made me hungry!

Suebee, lots of things can cause plucking.:( Can you maybe take her to a vet for a check-up? My girl is alone at home for 8 hours a day and on month end for up to 10 hours.:(

Just my luck, while posting this, someone outside is starting to

My guys love chicken fillet, BUT when doing the monthly shopping, we purchase a grilled chicken, with the bones, especially for Mishka. I break it up, and freeze it.

she'd was checked before xmass just before she came to live with us, wildheart, she does not do it every day, she started plucking same time in '09 as she did in '10 in 09 she stopped by spring an feathers grew back and then same again end nov 10, a breeder said she was in season, breeder also breed sene's, so because of how she behaves around my partner and adult men that come to the house i guess i am best to wait till march, infact she shows no interest in my sons friends.

when its just me and nut she is calm, same when its me and my son (13) but when ever my partners in the house, she won't leave him be, nips him, refuses to step off of him etc

I found this thread and I have question for those that give bones to parrots:

What happens when they chew the bone and decide to eat a little piece of bone they broke off? Wouldn't that piece get stuck in their throat/beak or something?

I'm thinking about giving my parrot some bones to play/chew on but I'm afraid of a little piece getting stuck somewhere
