When do they start to talk?

Just curious as to when Quakers generally start trying to talk? And how long before you can actually understand what they're saying. Also.. do all Quakers talk with good socializing?

Re: When do they start to talk?

The average age for a Quaker to start talking is 5 months. Some start earlier, some much later, and a few never imitate speech at all. Some QPs are "closet talkers" and will only talk when no one is in the room with them. Most parrots practice words quietly, sounding like they're mumbling. When they feel confident, then they'll say the word loudly enough so it can be understood.

Re: When do they start to talk?

My Quaker Minty started saying hello before he was weaned. I used to talk to him alot & by 12 months he could say about 70 to 80 words & sentences. But as cnyguy posted not all will talk. I guess it depends on the bird really.

Just start off with something you want your bird to say & once he gets the hang of it go on to something else. Minty will say "Hello my name is Minty & I am a little quaker".

Re: When do they start to talk?

My quaker started to talk at 6 months. She is also a cage talker. When she is resting in her cage in the afternoon she will talk to herself. I can hear words but I can't make them out. I think she's practicing. She will sometimes surprise me with a full sentence.

Re: When do they start to talk?

Yoshi is a chatterbox at 2 years old. I brought him home when he was about 8 months and he started talking with the first month of having him at home. They are great mimmicks but their word recognition is amazing as well. Yoshi will say thankyou when i kiss him and makes yummy "mm-mmmmm" noises when I bring him fresh food

Re: When do they start to talk?

Quincey starting talking around 5-6 months, and ever since she said her first word, she won't shut up! (not that I want her to )

If you talk to a quaker a lot (we have to repeat and repeat and repeat for Quincey to copy us) and repeat what you say, they'll evetually start talking. At first, Quincey was barely comprehendable. She's a bit better now, but she's only 10 months old.

Right now, she's repeating Hello Quince will kisses and wolfwhistles in between <3

Re: When do they start to talk?

We have had our blue quaker Otis for 10 months now, he is 16 months old. He will say "Are you a good boy or being a good boy" but not if my husband is in the room. I have heard that they practice to themselves and once they perfect it they will talk with people around. He is great at making kissing noises, clicking noises, barking and squeaking like the door which he will do in front of my husband. I don't know if he is not as comfortable with him or he wants to get it right before talking in front of his Daddy.

Re: When do they start to talk?

Our quaker, Lulu was probably about 5 months when she began to talk. She never came close to the talking ability of our Catalina Macaw Sunny and yet quakers are considered better talkers than macaws. I think it has a lot to do with enironment. We handfed Lulu and she was rarely around anyone else. Sunny spent a year in a backyard on a school bus stop and the kids talked tor her all the time. When they talked to her it was like they were talking to another kid and they expected her to answer. She loves children and wants to communicate with them. Sunny frequently talks in a childs voice even though she has been here for 18 months.
