I would ask the person you are getting the bird from what it was fed & if you think it's unhealthy you can slowly introduce a balanced diet of, fruit & veg, sprouts, pellets just to name a few.

These changes if any must be done slowly.

Congratulations on adopting a Quaker parrot! :) It would be helpful for you to learn as much as you can about what your newly adopted Quaker has been eating, what vegetables and fruits he likes best, and what his favorite treats are. Each parrot has his/her own food preferences and knowing ahead of time what your new parrot likes will give you a big advantage. New foods should be introduced gradually. Among my Quaker's favorite foods are fresh green peas, cooked broccoli and green beans. He really loves to get some of his regular pellets that have been softened in spring water-- he thinks they're a special treat. :D Most parrots like pumpkin seeds for a treat. Air-popped popcorn is a good choice too (no oil, salt or butter).

The Quaker I used to have that passed away was spoiled rotten. Since I raised him as a baby, I kinda let him eat what he wants to eat as he refuses to eat pellets. He won't be fruits and veggies unless he sees me eat them. He had me wrapped around his little toes. It was mainly because I raised him as a chick and I was very very close to him. One of the smartest little birds I've ever owned. The ONLY bird my family accepts!!! They love him dearly. Everyone was very upset when Cracker died after being mauled by a pup I just took in. He was a escape artist and I was only a few feet away from his cage fixing to go get him before he hopped off and the dog got to him before I could. He passed away at a young age of 7yrs old in my arms....Take good care of him, they're very very smart and special little birds!!!!!

As for the main diet, I would free feed him an organic pellet. I am currently using Harrison's High Potency.

For the rest of the diet, most of what you need to worry about is the same as with humans. They just can't have chocolate or avacadoes, and onion is not recommended. A bite of sweets isn't going to hurt the bird, but don't let him chow down on your bowl of ice cream. Wipe excess salt off salty things.

Congratulations! Post pictures when you get him. :-D

Quincey, female green Quaker
I use pine nuts and pumpkin seeds as treats, but I only give her treats very occasionally, like during training. Or in her foraging toys.

It's best to continue to give your bird what it was already eating, if it likes it. Originally, Quincey was on Tropican, but it wasn't the best. The vet gave me samples of better foods for her to try (including Lafeber and Harrison's), to see if she would like one of them better. If she didn't, then we would stay on Tropican. As soon as Quincey tasted Harrison's, she shunned her regualr food. So we switched to Harrison's, which is the best alternative, according to my vet. I'm happy that we stopped Tropican, it smelled like bubblegum!

I also give tonnes of veggies and fruit as well. Her favourites are blackberries, strawberries, kale, peas, carrots, sweet potato (cooked and mashed), and orange pepper.

Look on the internet, there are lots of sites that tell you which veggies and fruit are best to give.
