Quaker weaving twine

Our quaker, Popsicle, will twist most any object around the bars of his cage. If he can't twist it, he jams it until it is stuck. My wife decided to put a few strands of twine in there and he quickly wove them completely through the bars. So today she put a bunch more in there, and he got right to work. I thought it was kinda funny, so I figured I's post it.

If allowed, they can make quite some interesting and intricate nest cavities! Amazing, even!

They make super large nests....Got to see them first hand while down in FL one summer....They make them like condominiums where they all live together....I dunno if I want to live right by relatives and such....lol

That's the way they build their nests. Mine uses strips of paper, alfalfa straw, molted feathers and anything else she can get her beak around (if you call her name and say "Look what I have for youuuuu" she'll fly to you and take whatever it is from your hand and fly back to her 'nest' -an empty cage at this time but she changes the location every now and then)

aw cute! cooper has done that a little with his one toy, but nothing like that. maybe ill load his empty dish with twine and see what happens

okay i just put a ton of twine in his cage. he is already investigating it, but not really doing much.

This little birdie should join my cross-stitch group! Why don't you get him some coloured twine - I bet he could stitch a masterpiece! Popsicle is the cutest name, BTW.

Thanks for all the comments. We may very well try colored twine. That would look pretty cool.
mrgoogls, if we put too much twine in, he won't weave. We started with just a couple of strands, then added a bunch more. Maybe that will help get yours started too.

Pajarita, that is too funny. Popsicle will take treats through the bars, or chomp your finger...one of the two.

yeah, i filled his bowl up with it. he just started throwing it around, having fun the whole time haha. ill try only putting in a little. if he still just throws it then oh well. ill keep him stocked for that at least

Maybe try tying one or two strings from the top of the cage to see if he tries weaving them that way.

Gosh, it has been so long since Sam started weaving, I forget how he started. I think he started weaving his stuffed animals into the cage bars. It was quite a sight to see the little critters weaved and hanging by their arms, legs and wings. I think from there I gave him straws. He loves to weave straws. They are sturdy yet bendable. Sometimes I give him dowels. He does not care too much for strings, although he does like to weave his millet (weird, yes?). Right now his nest is huge. I tear it down (I feel horrible while doing that) and he starts back right away. It always ends up gigantic. It really is an amazing talent.
