Can someone please help me regarding my Quaker

Hi, can someone please help me, I have a four year old Quaker, yesterday it was a nice day so I put his large cage outside in the shade where he was very happy, i usually tie it to the fence so it doesn't fall over, anyway, he got out somehow, but didn't manage to get far, I think a cat got him, no serious injuries etc, so I took him to the local vets, she gave me antibiotics, he was a perky, after coming home he's dribbling, but its very slimmy sort of stringy, i've just noticed his tongue is white on the right side, i keep giving him mango jiuce and water, but know hes dribbling more out.

Whilst I find an avain vet, just wondering if anyone knows, i'm sure he's still in shock, moreso, I know the vet has missed something, saying that he was a bit perky there, but nothing like he normally is.

Its a very hot day, I do have him in a cool place, but worried about the lack of water he is taking and the dribbles.

Its 22nd May, if anyone can help I would be very grateful.

OH I am so sorry this has happened to your bird. I know you are concerned as any of us would be. We are not vets of ccourse so another vet visit is in order ASAP. Is he able to swallow? It could be an injury to the inside of his mouth or tongue. Poor baby I hope you can get to the vet soon.

What a sad thing to happen, we can never be to careful.
A visit to an avian vet is a must a.s.a.p.
If possible try giving him some water through a syringe, or better still, some formula.
Hope it is nothing to serious.
Please keep us posted

So sorry for your baby! He needs to see an avian vet ASAP! Cat saliva is toxic to birds and can kill them quickly. No force feeding please. Check to make sure he drinks. He does need to be kept warm, not cool. Try not to stress him. The dribbling and stickiness can be caused from being dehydrated from over heating. He needs to see an avian vet to get an injection of baytril to give him a bump start.

Cat saliva (and cat claws) harbor Pasteurella bacteria which is VERY deadly for birds.

The bit of good news if this is what the problem is, is that this is also very treatable, but it must be treated immediately.

I am often the one to encourage people not to over react, but in this case you need to get to an avian vet ASAP. Find one that is open on the weekend, even if you have to travel farther.

They can check whether it is an infection from the interaction with the cat and if caught early they can treat it successfully.

Quick thank you

Just a quick thanks to all those with words of wisdom, I did find an out of hours avian vet, whom I think knows his business, they have kept him there, I have just heard they have put him on a higher dose and seems to be recevering.

My fault was taking him to a vet who do not spe******e in birds, but failed to mention this when I booked in.

I hope all goes well for the little guy.

As far as distance is concerned I would have driven him anywhere to find the right vet.

Thanks again!:greenyellow:

Good to hear, I hope it all continues to go well. Keep us posted.

I hope I didn't sound too abrupt - just that this is one case where immediate treatment is a lifesaver.

It's a lesson for all of us: get to know vets in your area before you need them. Find the avian certified, or at least avian experienced vets, and know who is available on weekends.
