Dexter is 7 weeks old eating 10-12cc of formula 3 times a day.
He's showing an interest in millet and tomorrow I'm trying some pellets.
Is he too young to start the weaning process?
Thanks all. I'm new to hand feeding.

Nope, he's not too young at all. In fact, now is the perfect time to introduce all kinds of new foods to him, including fresh veggies and fruits.

Every bird weans at his own pace, so don't rush the progress.

Keeping a journal on his weight is recommended, so that you can keep track on his weight. :)

Thanks so much. I didn't want to do something I might regret later.
I am thrilled to have him in my life.

He is not too young, but don't rush it. I am new to hand feeding as well, but I truly believe in abundance weaning. We fed our budgies with formula until they had refused it entirely 2 days in a row, even though they were eating well on their own.

:greenyellow: Thanks henpecked. It's always good to have someone close by. Dexter is doing good. I'm going to soak some pellets for him for lunch and offer blueberry and strawberry. How can he say no to those?
Thanks again. I appreciate all tips. I've never weaned before.

have you tried spoon feeding him, i find that helps the weaning process along.

I haven't tried spoon yet. I plan to soon. I've had him just 2 days.
He's so precious. I can't wait for him to finally perch and his flight feathers to grow in. Teaching step up should be a breeze. :greenyellow:

I tried spoon feeding him his pellets and fruit this afternoon. It worked like a charm. I'll try the spoon with formula tonight but I'll have the syringe ready just in case.
He finished all his pellets and fruit. His crop is full and he's taking his nap now.
I love that I got him where I am the one weaning him. So much easier than weaning them off of seed to pellets :green2:

Soon to be 5 week old quaker
I'm about to get a 5 week old baby quaker. And I have been trying to figure out what the baby eats and what the baby lives in. I've seen the bird baby formula which I thought would be all it needs. But I've also heard that if I use a syringe *no needle* I could aspirate the baby. I've also read that the baby needs to stay warm. I didn't know if that goes for a 5week old. I saw using a heat lamp could help. Any help would be great. Thanks

Whoever you are getting the baby from should give you ALL of this info. If they won't/can't tell you all about what they baby needs now, and what he will need soon, how to wean, etc, then RUN AWAY FROM THEM and find a reputable breeder who cares about the wellbeing of their birds and not just about producing as many babies as possible and sending them home as early as possible.

Don't get this baby until he's weaned. The breeder may charge more but it will be worth it in the end.
