We are getting a baby Quaker at the end of August!
Hello everyone,
We brought our new baby Quaker home a month ago Sunday. His name is Ozzie and his hatch date is May 20th. I guess I didn't realize how smart Quakers arebecause I did not expect him to be learning tricks at less than 4 months old! The first trick " Wings!" We captured by saying it every time he stretched from the time we brought him home, now if he knows you have a treat he does it 3 or 4 times before you get to ask him lol. His second truck is just turning around but he learned it in 2 training sessions! He also makes kissing noises when you ask for a kiss or if he is just chattering on his stand. I think the only thing that is going to slow Ozzie down is me figuring out what to teach him next, it's like he gets in this mode where he has figured out that I am trying to teach him and tries his hardest to figure out what I want him to do and once he gets it that's it, he knows it! It's one of the awesomest things I've ever done I love it! Any training advice is welcome I'm a little new at this :)

Awesome :D It's so rewarding isn't it? I suggest you Target train him if you havent already. get a Chop Stick or something like it (Chinese) And hold it close to him. As soon as he touches his beak to the end of it, use a clicker and give a treat. Or a treat of you don't have the clicker yet. Has to be the instant he touches his beak to it. Don't reward if he bites it(breaking it). Do this a few times, then increase the distance from his beak to the stick until eventually he will travel a good distance to the stick to touch his beak to it for a treat. This will open up a whole world of things you can teach him, from rolling over, going through a hoop, even Recall training so he flys to you or a perch on command.

He is a parrot. I find that parrots will make you look like the best trainer in the world. If you just stay at it.

I am very interested in recall training...the breeder clipped his wings but he knows how far he can jump/fly and will jump from his stand or the floor to my finger if I get him interested in the treat enough. But I haven't figured out what specific command I should use yet....

I know your excitement yesterday my 10 week old tiel demonstrated her first trick. I set her on her cage and told her to "come see me" and she flew to me. At first I thought it was a fluke so I of course gave her praise and scritches and then set her back on top of her cage let her play a little while then said "Riley come see me" so I praised her again and put her back on the cage and repeated the process she did it every time I told her to come see me. If she was playing I would say her name to have her focus on me first and yes she does know her name.

Binky my 11 month old quaker, brought him home July 11,2014. Olly my o.w.a is 8 years old.brought him home,sept.3rd. :-)
Awwww sweet! I got very excited over my quaker saying peek a boo,now I don't even have to ask him to,if he sees me cover my face with my hands,he yells peek a boo! Soooo cute. He also whistles and does the kissy sound then kisses me when I come over to him.I've had him for 2 months now. He's almost 1 :) only down side with the peek a boo,I did give him treats when he said it,now if he sees me eating,he runs over to the edge of top of cage and yells...peek a booooo .I can't help but laugh! :)

Good for you, it sounds like Ozzie is wasting no time at all showing you how smart he is. Quakers are like that, both my quakers enjoy training sessions and amaze me with their curiosity and willingness to learn.

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
The attention oriented birds that love this sort of thing, love the interaction and learning that trick training brings. (Not to mention praise and treats.) Your biggest problem seems to be in keeping them from getting bored with it...

Basically anything that you can break down into steps you can teach them.

Tani Robar had the best trick training series I've ever seen. She has a website.

Hey, my RFM learned to skateboard her second day home from the breeders (just off hand feeding.)

What matters is whether the bird has an aptitude for it, and enjoys that sort of thing. You can't force it on them.

If they like it, they look forward to it. It's a form of interactive play. My conures used to go nuts when the trick toy box came out... It's playtime!!!

My amazons? Notsomuch.... (or at all!)
