In the very unlikely event that I add another bird to my flock, I will have DNA results before I bring the bird home. I will not take the word of the breeder, pet store or previous owner. The second reason I won't be fooled again is because I've run out of birds of questionable gender.

I thought Harry was male because she said, Be A Good Boy. Harry laid an egg. She still calls everyone Boys.

I was told with certainty that Poppy was a DNA tested male Umbie. She had brown eyes and female traits so I had her tested. Female. We changed her name from Popeye to Poppy.

This is the third and last time. I was told Zeke was DNA tested by the breeder. I was certain he was a male quaker. I found an egg in his cage. I didn't believe it even when I was looking at the egg. I blamed Sweet Pea or Harry for playing in Zeke's cage during out time. That theory didn't hold up because Zeke's cage was the last one cleaned before the birds went in for the night. Zeke is now Zelda!

If anyone wonders if it's harmful to change a bird's name, I'm pretty sure it doesn't bother the birds too much. It's pretty much SOP at our house.

I have to laugh that you've run out of birds of questionable gender :D! I can imagine what a shock and surprise it is to have happen once, but 3 times?! Goes to show how often you can't trust when people say they're sure it's a male or female! I like the name Zelda for a Quaker :).

Wow! You thought you had 3 boys and actually had 3 girls. Thats just a crazy kind of 'luck' right there. I bet next time you get a bid you probably will have to get DNA before deciding on a name! Maybe 2 DNA tests just to be 'sure':D The good news is, girls are sweeter:21:... Right?....RIGHT???:16::16::16:

We were told Kiwi had been DNA'd at some point, and he wasted little time "proving":52: he was a boy when we got him :54: I don't even feel a need to have him DNA'd myself I'm that sure.

Lol, April! Yes, if I get another bird I will send samples to two labs, no matter what I'm told about the bird's gender.

I wasn't surprised with Harry because I really didn't know for sure and she laid an egg soon after we adopted her. I was pretty sure Poppy was female no matter what I had been told. Zeke's egg truly shocked me. I've believed Zeke was a male for a long time, I'll have to get used to calling her Zelda.

Poppy is a very sweet female! I don't think anyone other than me would accuse my Harry of being sweet. A lot of people say female quakers don't talk as well as males, that's a myth. Some people say male quakers are more aggressive than females, I'd personally hate to meet the quaker who could rival Harry in pure meanness, at least when we first met her.

Oh well, at least I know now and I love my ladies.

I feel a little better after reading two articles that say the only way to determine gender in quakers is DNA testing.

April, I'm guessing from what you said, Amazon males and females do show behavioral differences?

Surprise! Females are better anyway right:D I mostly have males and they are all pains... 5 males and 4 females... Would you like a couple of my males to even out your ratio:p Hmmm or maybe I need one more female to even out my own...

For the most part, yes! They tend to become quite the 'exhibitionists' once they become mature and mating season rolls around:eek: They try to 'seduce' you in very different ways:52:

All of my boys are species where males can be more of a pain... except budgies, where it's the girls who are mean. My only girl is a budgie, and Twigs is an extra mean boy LOL. But I love them all :)

Lol - it's happened to me before once, with my budgie many years ago.
So when I picked up my ringneck, and they told me they were 'pretty sure' he was male, I named 'him' Henry. If the ring doesn't turn up we'll switch it to Henri.

Hehe I've been calling Kyo She since I've had her… so she's probably going to turn out to be a He if I ever get around to getting the DNA test done.. still haven't had the nerve to pluck those feathers.

Lol Aandeg! A third test and trust two out of three?

It really makes no difference to me as far as the bird's concerned, they are the same birds I fell in love with. It's nice to know the gender in case of health issues.

Now that the shock's worn off, we've decided to call Zeke, Zee rather than Zelda. She calls herself Zeke and says the name clearly.

Hi. I have a pair of Quakers. I brought Lola first and a few months later Ben. Neither DNA sexed. Once sexually mature it became very apparent that Lola was a boy and Ben a girl. They seem to take great delight in doing their thing in front of us (even on my arm) or in front of other birds, being discrete about such things doesn't seem to be a Quaker trait.
They are now called Forrest and Fern, Forrest being standard green and Fern being a cinnamon. They soon learnt their new names : )

The people we took our bird from swore up and down he was male. Of course, given their inability to provide even the basic of care for the bird we had our doubts and had him tested. Yep, Bacca is a girl.
