Hi,
I am the owner of a 5 month old Quaker named Keiko. When I got her 3 weeks ago I took her to the avian vet and she was given a clean bill of health. Recently she has been constantly opening and closing her mouth while flicking her tongue in her mouth with noticeable saliva. Have a feeling she should go back to the vet. Very worried.

I would get kieko to the vet as soon as possible. Those symptoms sound serious. Please let us know what you find out. I wish you and Kieko the best.

Any updates on Keiko? I'm hoping you were able to get him to a vet this morning, looking forward to good news.

Hi, took Keiko to the vet. She has a bacterial and fungal infection in her mouth. Started medicines today. Hopefully she will be better soon, and no more kisses from us beak to mouth or from the dogs. We most likely made her sick, and feel terrible about it. Thanks for your feedback and concern.

Thanks for the happy update! I'm glad you were able to see your vet so soon, now that Keiko is being treated she should recover quickly. It's easy to get so comfortable around our pets that we forget about little details like bacteria filled human saliva. This is a great reminder to all of us.

Bacca (Quaker)
Yes, human (don't know about dogs) saliva is bad for birds. It has bugs that they don't have a defense against. I've got to be especially careful with Bacca as she'll try to sneak a bite out of my sandwich or anything else I'm eating that looks tempting.
