A colony of wild quakers built these nests near Dallas Texas.

I've posted similar threads and photos but I keep hoping there are other quaker builders whose parronts visit the forums, I'd love to chat with you.

This is our male quaker, Sammy. He is happiest when he has an abundance of sticks to build with. This is a project from a couple of months back. A lot of his work had to be taken down because he kept barricading the doors of his cage and the sticks need to be cleaned often.

This is his basket, I pick up all his scattered sticks and clean them and the basket daily. He's fast, he will use most of the sticks and throw the rest on the floor.

His projects are getting more sophisticated. He's learned that I only remove the sticks that block the doors. This is his newest project, he's been working on it for a few days.

I found a stainless steel bucket for his building supplies online from 'The Laughing Parrot.' I think it will be much easier to keep clean. I couldn't resist the optional foot toys, but Sammy ignored the 'bucket o booty' and took a break to have a shower and a snack. I love the way quakers hold their food in their fists.

And a close up of his recent work.

He's tried to encourage Harry, our girl quaker to build her own house of sticks, he takes sticks to her cage and tries to give them to her. She either ignores him or chases him away. He likes to fly with his sticks and drop them on me and his flock mates. He's a talker too, makes for some very funny conversations. If I get too close to his construction sites he says, 'what are you doing, stop it, oh my God, thank you, good good good!' Talking with quakers can be a little eerie, they study you and seem to think before they speak.

:11: Those quaker constructions are MOST impressive, Allee! :11:

But your Sammy alone is quite the architect as well! :D

I'm pretty sure I fell in love with parrots after trying to figure out what the wild ones were in Louisiana...so Quakers started my parrot obsession!

Christine, I am about three hours away from the metroplex where the wild colonies are, but Texas has a lot of wild quakers and the numbers are growing.

It makes sense that Sammy wants his flock to join in, he must think we are extremely lazy.

It is very entertaining to watch Sammy. If his nests keep growing, he'll need an extra cage to build in.

Sammy is quite the construction expert. :) Ralph, as you know, just likes to arrange and rearrange his sticks-- and the spoons from the silverware drawer (imagine what a Quaker nest built from those would look like :D) and doesn't seem to want to build anything permanent.

Wow, I'd love to see the wild Quakers in person. Heck, I've hardly seen any in person period, since we're 'never' supposed to see them as pets out here in CA.

Sounds like Sammy might have a stronger building instinct than many pet Quakers? I've never heard of it before your Sammy!
