Hello everybody, sorry to say that this has to be my first post but I need advice from other seasoned bird owners.
I have 3 quaker parrots, a ringneck and sun conure so i've been in the bird world for 11 years. I've never had anything bad happen, until yesterday.
I had all the babies out as I was at my desk working (my desk in in their room) they stay out all day and I spend a majority of time in here with them. Anyway my friend came over and we were going out for dinner. He is friendly with all the birds except one. Rosie is a quaker who is very much bonded to me and hates anybody who isn't me. My friend has helped me return birds to their cages many times when i'm leaving. However this time it went horribly wrong. I had my back turned and at that time Rosie had been in his cage on his swing. My friend approached the cage to quickly close the door because Rosie was already inside and at the same time Rosie surged forward. I turned around just to see some part of Rosie stuck between the door and then fall to the bottom of the cage.
I was horrified and the only thing I could do was scream, he was laying there wings outstretched head to turned to one side not moving. I thought he was dead. After about probably 30 seconds my head came back to me and i ran over to the cage and he was blinking but his breathing was obviously distressed with his beak partly open and panting. He made no indication that he knew i was there, blinking every once in a while. I had no idea what to do. I picked him up out of the cage careful to support his neck because I didn't know what had gotten slammed in the door. I took him to my bedroom and put him on my pillow and slowly he started to come around I guess you could say. He pulled his wings back in. He started making eye contact. His legs had previously been locked in a outstretched position, he moved those and pulled them in. His breathing got better, but still not normal. The only thing obviously wrong was his left foot was balled up and he would not extend his toes. I just kept lightly petting his head and he came around more standing up but still not using that foot. After a little more time I had calmed down sufficiently enough I called the one 24 hour vet around here only to find out they do not treat birds. They gave me a number of the nearest 24 hour vet and it was 3 1/2 hours away. I live on the eastern shore of maryland for those who will say that's crazy.
After about an hour he was standing up and perching on my fingers, he had outstretched all his toes however his front right toe on his left foot is obviously either broken or dislocated, it does not bend to grab the perch the nail kind of sticks straight out. I stayed up with him most of the night sitting at my computer with the lights out letting him be in his cage. I changed the papers in his cage so I could monitor his droppings in the morning. It's now 11:45 am so about 18 hours since the injury. He is still not acting totally normal, he will whistle and make kissy noises at me. He won't talk. His droppings are not normal, he is pellet fed and his droppings always look the same. Right now they are stringy and very wet and at some point during the night they were just white liquid. I haven't seen him attempt to eat or drink and I offered some of the daily scrambled egg to him and he showed no interest. Other than his toe I don't know what could be wrong. He is acting very sleepy, eyes closed standing on the perch. I always heard it's bad if they are sleeping and one foot isn't pulled up. His is not either, he's standing on both. Is he just recovering? Or is there something more going on?
My avian vet only works on tuesdays and thursdays. There is only one in the area. If I were to have to take him somewhere it would have to be Baltimore or Washington, DC which is a 3 1/2 hour drive for me and very expensive. I will do that if what I have described seems life threatening. If anybody has had experience with this and can lend some advice please do. Thank you.
