i just brought home a 3 year old quaker last night.
im wondering what would be the best treat to use to attempt to begin making friends with Morty. i sat and ate my dinner beside his cage last night. i offered a tiny taste of my mashed potatoe which he did accept and seemed to enjoy even though it was tiny amounts.
tonight i may open his cage door and see if he is interested in exploring outside his cage so im hoping to have something to offer that he will really like

the best trick is to try a couple different foods on a plate and see what he goes for first. I found raisins to be really good for my conure. I would split them into little pieces and of course they smell quite a bit so he would bee-line for them. But some birds enjoy different foods so try lots of different things. It's good to use a couple different treats so they keep interested

I use millet for all mine. You just have to offer them each treat and see what they choose. I don't know a smaller parrot that doesn't like millet!

Try some plain popcorn. Air-popped is best-- never use any oil, salt or butter when making popcorn for parrots. Lots of parrots like pumpkin seeds (mine don't, but they seem to be the exceptions to the rule). My QP Ralph would do almost anything for some fresh green peas; they're a regular part of his diet and not a treat. Unsalted nuts are often welcome treats-- a small piece of almond or walnut, for instance. Experiment a little to see what your QP likes.

you should have told that to my old conure! He hated millet and would push it out of his cage if I offered him a bit

we have only had him since thursday. i sit and talk to him beside his cage for 5-10 minutes at a time. about every half hour or so when i am home after work. the others in my family greet him and sit in the living room through the day
.he doesnt appear afraid of us.
when i went to pick him up the owner put him on my hand and he did bite me softly nothing that came near to hurting.
im wondering if its too soon to attempt to let him come out of cage tonight, if he wants to that is

Sounds like little Morty is sort of friendly already :) I agree with David...secure the room and open his house door and step back and see what he does...betcha he'll be out in no time.

Take it nice and easy.

I know it seems like forever but this is only the very beginning of your friendship.

the stronger you can create that bond now, the better your relationship will be.

you create a bond by building trust.
He has to trust that from you nothing unpleasant will happen,
you are the source of all things fun and adventurous.

my birds want to be with me and step up because they know that I am awesome.
I never have to use treats to get them to do what I want.
they just trust me.

its like a courtship.

you can put some great music on (beck or gorillaz for example) and dance like a fool.

or you can sing (perhaps Blur) out of tune, make up lyrics;
it doesn't matter your bird will swear that you are a rock star and that you are creating this music just for them.

if you open the cage Monty may come out to dance with you either on the outside of the cage or even make his way to the floor.
And at that time the dilemma will be how to get him back in the cage without breaking trust.

have fun
this is a long term friendship.

yep he flew around the room. landed on the couch beside me..and was sitting on my shoulder eatting treats.. his previous owner said he wasnt aggressive at all, him and his wife seemed ok with him. their teenage girls seemed a little leery of him. i was a little nervous having him so close to my face, but he was talking and laughing so im thinking he is feeling more comfortable.

When BB is out and on my shoulder, when he starts with his "singing" I follow along with his tune with my own "style" and he gets into it! Louder he goes and banging his head on my shoulder..then gets RIGHT UP to my ear and sings his little heart out..he loves it lol.

sounds like you have had a good time!

Many birds have different personalities which means of course some are just friendly! It also sounds a lot like the previous owners did make a lot of time for him and cared for him

yes i do believe he was treated really well. when i picked him up from them, they took the time to show me his routines and how he likes to bathe and introducing him to me. i could tell they were sad to see him go and glad that he would be with a family that can smother him with time and love.

things are going really well. we have had him out of the cage quite often the last couple days. he laughs in my ear. he nibbles and taste tests my chin and ears.
he is also in love with my father. as soon as my dad walks in.. i am cast aside. lol he literally flies through 2 rooms and right to my dad when he hears him walk in. im totally ok with being 2nd favourite. since my dad is retired he is home all day. they can keep each other company.
