So I was just browsing the web looking at parrots like I do most days and came across an interesting thing. As a resident of Kentucky I am not legally allowed to sell or purchase a quaker because they are considered pests. I wasn't looking to buy one but if I had I would of been upset but I rather just kinda laughed. They're really cool birds and who knows maybe one day ill move to get one lol

There is a slowly growing number of States that are adding specific Parrots to their list of Band Pets with classifications from Pests to Invasive. Before you move, assure that you investigate the requirements of the State, prior to the move.

Yeah!
New Jersey, home of the great vendor MySafeBirdStore, won't allow Quakers OR Patagonian Conures... I discovered this while chatting with them. I guess the idea is that they are two species who are seen as capable of surviving/multiplying/colonizing in such seasonally harsh environments!
So the Rickeybird can't go on Sabbatical there!

There are actually colonies of Quakers up in New York; Virginia... and even as far down as Texas.

They are good at adapting, and smart little things.

But they are stealing the homes and food of native species like the Robins, Jays, Black-birds and so on ... going so far as raiding the nests of several species.

They are wonderful pets, but they are also invasive when set free by irresponsible owners and that is why there is a ban on them in many states. Sadly it is pretty much too late now as breeding colonies will just get larger as time goes by.

Why do I think the Rickeybird would be so much at home at the Jersey shore?

Some states, like Maine, have reconsidered and now allow QPs to be kept as companion parrots. It's nice to see the right thing being done.

Here are some online articles about naturalized Quaker parrots in Brooklyn, New York:

What are wild parrots doing in Brooklyn? - BrooklynParrots.com

I saw something like this while I was looking it up and some states are legal with restrictions but illegal otherwise for me it's illegal with no acceptions

Yeah, quakers steal food etc from native species, but a large reason the northern states ban them is because they build those elaborate, very LARGE communal nests around power transformers, for the heat.

Its really sad in all honesty but Quakers are a thriving species due to their intelligence I think but scientists still cant really figure out why they are thriving and surviving.

The Quaker population grows every day but so many are destroyed every day too. Its just one of those unfortunate things that wont ever change because the population keeps growing and they are considered pests and do ruin ecosystems but don't deserve to die. There's a documentary about it on youtube but its rarther sad to watch.

They are amazing pets though with just the best personalities. If you want a big Parrot but don't want a big Parrot. Get a Quaker x
