Have had Kiwi almost 3 weeks now....he’s tolerated me! He’s adjusting sooo good, he likes his play stand and me! I’ve been treating him when he kisses me and then today he has decided he likes nuts and like my desk and eating them out of my hand!! He’s like a different bird today! Love love it!!

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
Isn't it odd how that happens?

It can change from time-to-time (rude, nippy, hormonal etc) but once you establish that trust, things (as a rule) tend to get easier...AS A GENERAL RULE... Do not assume you will never get bad behavior/biting (because I am sure you will), but it is funny how the shift from "tolerated/disliked" to "preferred/loved" can take place. Glad all is well :)

ps: My very sweet bird got very frustrated with me for keeping her up too late (15 min) and bit me (drawing blood) just recently. I haven't had this issue since very early in our relationship and when it happened, it was like a random blip---she still was great the next day. I guess I tell you to prevent you from taking any "backsliding" as a personal vendetta (it can feel very much like a knife in the back, if you don't know that it is coming). I know what I did wrong, and she is annoying, but that is only because we don't share one brain lol.

I know he hates it when I have my hair in a ponytail or make it curly!!! LOL He hasn't bit me yet! I'm sure it will happen. He growls at me alot! lol its so funny. Yesterday he hated me but I've been giving him treats every time he kisses me so he has that figured out. I've been moving the millet spray so that he has to come get it and then bam, he just walked over to me! I was shocked. He keeps doing it. When he does something new he will do it like 3 or 4 times in a row before he moves on to something else. I appreciate all your advice and I"m sure I will need more!! Your little companion sounds like alot of fun!!

I had to do alot of adjustments to make it user friendly for him. He likes it now. Strange, he wont play with toys inside of his base cage, only on top of the cage. Is that odd for these birds?

I know it may be wrong for me to say this, but...in so many ways, I see parallels between birds and kids with Autism (my students will even tell you this!)

The point is, nothing is strange if your whole basis for "strange" is your own perspective. Does that make sense? When the entire world is a giant pain, then even the smallest details can derail the "train".....Even if no one else sees the trouble. Time and ABA are usually good bets....and no, I don't get paid to say that lol. Congrats again! I have students who can't look at certain colors without "losing it".

Birdie never plays with the toys in her cage. I've taken some out to her hanging gyms, and then she'll play with them. Birdie's really only in the cage to sleep, if I know people are coming to the front door, or if we have to leave the house.

After a few weeks, you won't remember what life was without him. Lots of learning and fun stuff coming your way. Keep in touch. Great photos.

Last night kiwi got a lot of uninterrupted sleep! My husband works nights and sleeps all day so on his days off he's up with tv on until 1:00. I wonder if kiwi isn't sleeping good on those nights? I cover his cage but the tv is still on and then I am up at 5 for work. Maybe I need to move him into another room to sleep?

Congrats sherylb on your new baby:) And I agree with noodles123 about the autism thing, or maybe more like Asperger’s but they’re definitely on the spectrum somewhere! Baby ScoMo has decided today that I’m not all bad, I’ve only had him a week or so and he’s very young but he’s making great progress. He’s going for his first vet check next week - my avian vet knows I’m an anxious mother & has offered to prescribe “client Valium” for me on occasion! Fingers crossed for a good result!

Whether or not people admit it, uninterrupted sleep is VERY important for most birds.
My bird's worst days (and injuries) have followed nights when I was moving around at all hours----QUIETLY, but still shuffling papers etc.
