My cousin Vinny is a 7 yr old rescue which I have posted several times. I have had him since June and he is doing well building trust. He greets me each morning with a kiss and says about 10 words and phrases. My question is -is Vinny too old to learn new words? I talk to him all the time, especially when the context matches the phrase. For example, Good morning when I uncover him in the morning. I have 10 minute training sessions 3x daily on a training perch away from his cage. We practice "step-up" and I am working on having him wave. I know that he is a smart bird but also stubborn. Should I keep trying to increase his vocabulary or just be thankful for what he does say? Thanks

My opinion only - would be that absolutely you should continue to try to increase his vocabulary. My Bindi is 7 (and a rescue) and seems to enjoy learning new sounds - she’s not a good talker but she has fun with it. If he says something new, then great...if not, you still worked on building a bond while interacting with him. I don’t think they’re ever too old to expand their horizons, same as us :).

Vinny is young at seven, I think he will spring some new words on you, especially with you working with him like that. Trick training is so good for him, they like to be active ;) My Neptune was learning words like mad, but he has stopped saying many of them now. But they are smart! He had gotten into my GCC cage and was playing and it was time for me to lock him up for the night in his own cage. Well he wouldn't come out her cage is close to four feet deep. He was ducking and dodging lol finially he said You get out of there! That's what I say to the dogs!!! When they are messing around the parrot cages. He had never said that before the little sponge! So what I am saying is he is listening! He is storing stuff away in his mind, you just never know when he might surprise you lol...the more drama , the more fun it is to say the more luck you might have. We need more Vinny picture too!

Glad to hear that Vinny is talking again. By all means keep working on teaching him new things. Parrots are capable of learning new words well into old age.
