So my kid & I went outside for several hours because the weather was so nice... We came back into the house, and guess who had squeezed out from under the bedroom door and come looking for us in the kitchen!? He just waddled over to us like he owned the whole house, chirping, like 'Hey, there you are! I was looking for you!'
So I guess if we're going to be outside for more than an hour or so, he has to be in his cage!!!

Glad he was okay! He should be caged if you are gone for any amount of time :) they can be incredible escape artists!

Hi! You should never leave a parrot loose, unsupervised! They are a three year old with a full set of tools! Especially a Quaker! He also has an engineering degree!

Yup, being caged while unsupervised is really important for his safety, and to save the destruction of your home. WAAAAAAAY too many things that little beak can get into, unless, of course, the room he's in is bird proofed. Not so much in this case I assume, since he escaped under the door. I don't have Quakers, but I understand they have a reputation for their escape abilities. They're actually illegal to own in our state due to the potential for wild flock destruction of power lines and such, as has happened elsewhere. I think chances of that are remote at best, but that's the logic behind the ruling.

Very cute though that he came looking for you! Mine definitely do that. Tucker, my Ekkie, is fully flighted, so he will just appear out of nowhere on my shoulder. Baxter, my YNA is flighted, but is more the perch potato sort, and would rather walk than fly. She's one to find waddling across the house when searching for me. She's also more vocal, so generally beckons me forth to come get her before venturing out lol!

Thanks, everyone. We're planning on using a little cage to bring him outside with us once it's warm enough to get in the pool, which is when we spend the most time outside, but typically one or the other of us is in the room all day except for 5-10 minute intervals. (I'm disabled so pretty much chair/bed bound) - and it's a huge pain to get him to go into his cage since he is only recently willing to step up onto a perch. If we put him in the cage every time someone went to the bathroom, etc it'd be non-stop in and out of cage-ing, which means no one would ever get to go to the bathroom, lol, bc it takes 15/20 min to get him in! Plus his cage is huge so we made him this super nice play stand at the window so we don't have to try to manhandle it in and out every day...
He sits on his play stand area & doesn't ever leave it, so it was a real surprise that he got down and came looking for us. His flight feathers were trimmed very short by the vet the lady who rescued him came to so he can't fly at ALL and he doesn't even try to fly down. He has lots of places to climb up and down and over and back and so on - I think this time he was just worried bc we were gone for a long time. When he gets his flight feathers back, we'll need to rethink it, but by then I'm hoping that his 'step up' is more developed, and we'll have a system for getting him to go in his cage without a mutiny every time. :)

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
be cautious about bringing him around a pool-- chlorine is a gas and birds are very sensitive to gasses like that.

Quakers are the ultimate engineers of the parrot world. The reason they get outlawed is becasue they build these tremendous communal nests around power transformers and other electrical equipment, so big and well constructed that they need to be blasted apart.

He will enjoy coming outside with you! I've been rolling my cages outside with all doors ziotied shut. I stay right outside with them because once I just went inside to plug in my phone and q stray cat was about to pounce on the cage;!!! I was gone less than 3 minutes! I'd never seen the cat around! But the quakers have loved Being in the shade in their cages so happy!

They are so social and smart. He was alone and he was coming to look for you all !! ;)

Neat idea!! I've never seen him do anything but destroy, haha but I'm sure he'd build if he had the right materials!

Oh, thank you for letting me know! I'll have to look into that!!

Awwww happy bird!

It's my favorite thing to scritch his little head and see him soften up and close his eyes and just lean into it. he's a happy little guy. :) Love him!!!

My only sadness is that we can't cuddle these darling birds! I'm used to pets I can squish and kiss on, and I mourn over not being able to kiss his sweet little cheeks!!! But I'll learn to live with it, haha! :)
