New member of the Flock

So I gave in and brought home this lovely young Quaker (Sorry picture is awful.)

He? is somewhere between 2 and 3 years old and in that short time has had an unstable life. We would be his fifth or sixth home. I couldn't not take him when I worked that out. Poor little guy. The only issue as far as I can work out is he won't step up. He doesn't bite, he's not aggressive, he's very quiet at least so far. He's quite happy for me to stick a finger through the bars and give him a scratch on the head.

Previous owner had him for 3 weeks before rehoming. They felt that he wasn't getting enough attention. I think that it was how loud a quaker can be. The store that sold them the bird saw them coming and took full advantage. First time bird owners who had no idea.

We have named him Nimbus

Re: New member of the Flock

Congratulations on Nimbus, May you have a long happy life together .
Quaker almost always become cage protective , it might take they feel confident before that is expressed. My sweet adult re Homed to me Pikachu just became cage aggression/ protective this month which is ten months since I got him! Still very sweet and cuddly away from cage , but I can’t stick my fingers in any cages no way! So hopefully you guys will be working on bonding out of the cage soon.

When I brought Penny home she wouldn’t step up from the cage, I had to let her come out and climb on perches I stuck outside the cage then step up from there. She was cage aggressive from the beginning.

I hope you fall as hard as I have fir Quaker’s, they are smart and social, but you gotta spend time with them out if the cage ( I know you will ) gotta keep their bright minds busy or they turn to screaming, sbd they do like to just make noise so you want to go as that on talking or whistle as that’s easier to take. They really seem to enjoy their veggies and leafy greens much more than green cheeks, and some protein like scrambled or boiled eggs and some well cooked chicken. Especially during molt.
They also seem to take to toys and enjoy them more than my GCC , they seem to really like little foot toys, to carry and fly with.. those yucca chips they can chew and destroy are a favorite, and mine love to bathe or get gently spritz ,
They seem to really understand stuff quickly and indeed what yiu are saying to them , and seem to really be humorous,
This species is one of the most re homes parrots, they can make a lot noise just because they like too, and because they get bored, they don’t do well hours alone in the cage.... my two green cheek did ok when I worked and they spent a day caged , I don’t think my Quaker’s would handle that.... but I’ve been a stay at home mom since I got into Quaker’s

Welcome new Quaker!! Can’t wait to see and hear more about him!!

Re: New member of the Flock

So far he is showing himself to be a little quirkier than my other birds. Shrieks and carries on for attention but when he gets it doesn't want it. Has tried a couple of times to poop on me through the bars when I have come over to talk to him. But at the same time he will lean through the bars for kisses, fluff up and purr and lean over for head scratches.

We are ignoring the shrieking and giving the attention when he is quiet. I was expecting a more difficult bird as we are the third home in the last 4 or 5 weeks but he is very sweet for having been shipped around so much.
