I do have two cats -Riply & Nano bites-
four snakes- china, dip & stick, and Grand Chahee-
I have contacted a TAG breeder, but I havent desided when I should pick up a baby. Another issue is The breeder is across the country, I would have to have it shipped to me, though Id have to meet it halfway and take it home with me on a airlines.

I havent really committed to a bird of any kind yet, Ive always wanted a Macaw, but I live in a condo, They do have birds here, Ive heard them screaming from the other buildings. So because Macaws are so loud, Ive settled on a TAG, mostly because Ive heard they are alittle more quiet then other species, part of the reason I desided on one of them was because of an encounter with a CAG I had when I was a girl.

I am only going to get one long time friend and pet and I want it to be the right one for me, I can have bird allergies, I love the Cockatoos, and nearly got a Umbrella, but after 9 days of not being able to get the bird to take a bath, I found that every time he started screaming and flapping, it would get hard for me to breath. (he was a rescue, part of a hording case, so he accually hadent baithed in close to 7 years)

so Cockatoos and Macaws are out, anyone have an Idea of a good condo bird? (the place is pet friendly, they love animals here, and I am friends with the people across and above me)

how about something a little smaller like a senegal, but these can give off a load of dust lol

how would the friendships cope with intrusion of noise?? lol

so no birds nearer to you then? even older birds??

I had been looking to adopt or rescue, but our bird rescue up here are hard to deal with, just cause you have animal experence, dosent mean you know what your doing, so about a year of classes just to adopt from them, and even then they wouldent let you adopt a large bird. (Anything larger then a budgie)

And like the TAG, there arnt any Senegal breeders up here either. I am still faced with ordering and haveing them shipped to me via Air cargo. I wouldent mind as long as I can bathe the bird every day, I have a air purifyer already set up (we get dust storms)

and yes, they tell me with little notes if there is anything happening around here. (women across the way has a dog who barks nonstop, I dont mind, as long as the dog lets me sleep, and she makes sure he dosent bark after 6 pm, and the child upstairs plays hard while mom is running on her treadmill, both stop at 9pm)

as for rescuing or adopting, I guess I am still waiting for that "click" when I see my bird and know he feels it too. (havent found it yet, even though Ive visited the local birds for sale sevral times already)

awww good luck on your search and misting is fab and only way i can get nut wet, she likes to be misted on some1s shoulder so she aint the only 1 gettin wet lol

your nieghbours sound good! my next door nieghbour has a dog that cries and barks all day and sometimes through the night grrr an my offer of dog sitting just fell on deaf ears

but you do right with waiting for the bird to click with you, especially with the older ones, as i know how much hard work is required for them to come around with change etc

good luck on your search X

If you don't currently have a lot of bird experience, I would steer clear of rescues for the time being. It sounds like you didn't have a very good experience with your last rescue attempt.

I usually don't recommend large birds for folks who don't currently own a bird or have large bird experience. But if it were me, I would get the bird that YOU REALLY WANT. If that is a Macaw then get a macaw. There are quieter macaws such as a Greenwing. I think most macaws become noisy from being spoiled by their owners. Then once they get spoiled, the owner no longer wants to spend the time with them that they used to and so the bird starts demanding attention, which they get just to shut them up.

It sounds like to me, your condo area accepts birds such as macaws, but that is something you would have to ask the condo association about. All birds have noisy times like in the mornings or later in the afternoon or evening. Unless you plan on having several birds, I wouldn't settle.

Also, if a bird doesn't take a bath on their own, I would get a misting bottle and mist them thoroughly every couple of days, especially the dusty ones like Greys and Senegals.

Leroy (black headed caique) my little moody bird
Dusty (hahns macaw) my clown
All I can advise is to do your homework hun......maybe decide on a species and study all you can on it....learn how loud they are, how dusty, life spans, special diets, hyper, calm...all that good stuff....if something feels right then it will fall into place for you...
What was your reasoning for a grey other then your experience as a child. What attracts you to the breed. Do you know much about them?
Macaws come in all sizes from hahns (smallest of macaws) to Greenwings (largest of the macaws) My little hahns rather talk then yell but let me tell you,,,he can be VERY loud. LOL
I really think if you take your time and do your homework, you will find exactly the right bird for you and it will fit into your life and have a forever home. Without doing your research you may end up with something you weren't expecting and we don't want that to happen....I commend you on starting out with asking on this forum....good luck and if there is anything I can do to help..please let me know.

In my limited experience, my CAG is the quietest of our 3 birdies. She can be loud from time to time, but she doesn't really screech. And our RFM almost never screeches, either, although her "chatter" can be noisy.

Greys are dusty birds so they may aggrivate your allergies. Not as dusty as 'too, but still, more than other birds.

ive accually been around quite a few birds, and each has had compleatly diffrent attitudes then the others I had seen, the first 'too I seen was evil, it would sit on his masters shoulder and scream, and scream... and scream. (she would let him) Lary (last too I met) besides not taking a bath and giving a few nips to people who wanted to put him back in the cage, was a Great bird!

and Captain was a TAG, who owned a petstore when I was going to highschool, I visited him at least once a week, he would fallow me around the store, flying from shelf to shelf, watching, it was funny, he never said a word, and I never offered to touch but we became quite close. then there was my sunny, who cried for me when I had to finally go home with my mom when I was 15. (these are the two I remember most of all my encounters) and the last CAG where I finall heard the infamous CAG growl and screams.

then the millions of encounters with small birds, budiges and cockatiels, the best one Ive ever had was Eddy, my dad and family were outside on the deck talking, and my dad seen this thing hurling twords them and asked if that was a bat, my causin gave my dad a blank face as a tiny budgie flew out of the trees and hit him in the side of the head, after a few minuets of screaming my causin settled down and brught him inside, (they still have him, its been 7 years)

I dont mind loud from time to time, weekends might be a problem, women upstairs sleeps in to a wopping 8 am, otherwise its 5 30 or 6 when they start stomping around and running for work.

Angie, across from me wont hear a thing, she never does, including the bloodhound that cornered a cat in front of her door and Bayed at it for a good 10 minuets before I chased him off and rescued the cat (witch turned out to be in shock from the encounter) just the other day. everyone Else heard the dog, except her.

You could always get some kind of mini macaw. They can be loud, but not as loud as bigger macaws! But an AG doesn't sound bad!

If you had a problem with a cockatoos dust you may have the same problem with a greys dust. My grey can get pretty loud. Its a real high pitched whistle that almost hurts my ears, but I am thinking I just have to learn to drown it out like I have with the ringneck and the amazon.

I love having a mini macaw....dusty keeps me in stitches with his talking and clowning around.
I have no doubt that you will find the right fit for you. Good luck. :)

I would have been fine with Lary(hes a umbrella cockatoo) but he just wouldent take a bath, and would flip out every time we got the squirt bottle out, it was a huge hastle, and he learned how to open the cage door, so when he seen that, it was beeline to the door and UNDER a desk, cause that was the only place we didnt dare squirt him.

Ive heard of mini macaws, but I know nothing about them, how are they as quiet birds? and what about the dust? could they fit in the same 3 by 4 day cage?

I might have landed myself the caretaker of a/some birds in the future. a women came in today talking about the birds her mother has. there are four of them, a amazon, one that sounds like a quaker or mini Macaw, a eclectus and a sun conure and how her father was ill, the doctors said maybe two months more. well the mother has a heart condition and they are thinking about the birds already, she dosent know much of them but is trying to learn, I named the birds off the top of my head from her descriptins because Ive been looking into owning one for so long that it was just automatic. anyway, she took my name and phone number and gave me this look that was like "I am going to remember you"

all in all, it was really vary strange, shes going to bring in some donations and I am going to see if she will will the amazon to my coworker, she deserves a nice bird, after taking on John "Wane" (apparntly its vary evil)

I really doubt it will happen any time soon, if at all.

the birds are in the mothers will, the daughter is learning to take care of the birds as we speak, and the bird rescue is going to be involved. (if they had any say about it, they would get all the birds, they dont have much faith in people)
