Hiya, seeing as I am a first time bird owner I just wanted to know;

1. How often do you trim the 'claws' / Nails? of your bird. Do you all do it like regularly each and every month? Or just when you see that they have grown longer?

2. Do you do them.... or is it a vet jobby?

Thank you :)
~Regards
Maria!

lol depends on your bird, you can do it yourself, as long as you are confidant an know what your doing, as the toes continue into the nails and its only the very tips that need doing

all birds nails look long to me lol

i put trimming perches into nuts cage, but they don't seem to be effective and i have read about concrete perches being better but can't seem to find them on line.

i spoke to vets about doing nuts nails, and vet basically said, he'll probably sedate her to do it, less stressful for her, but i don't like the risk of sedating. plus it was at the time when nut was mental and i really didn't want to give her reason to take out any aggression on me lol

Acorn - a Yellow Sided Green Cheek Conure;
Bob - a Cockatiel;
Cricket - an American Budgie
Everything I've read about trimming perches say that they have a tendancy to tear up the birds feet so I removed Bob's. I am going to be taking him in to the place I got him for his nails as he came with free grooming for life.

I will maybe talk to the local Avian vet about it when I get Damien's first check up!

Thanks for the replies!

I have concrete perches for my parrots. My amazon uses is often and I haven't trimmed his nails in a few years, yes I said a few years. My ringneck needs his done at least once a year, and we'll see how Ida, the grey goes. :)

Oh Thanks Abby!
I will have to try hunt around for a cement one, I haven't seen those in the pet shops. I should try ebay or amazon, perhaps!

I don't trim or get the vet to trim... I use a nail file & we do it together! She's still getting used to it but she is doing great with it!!
It's also a great bonding activity too :)
We do a couple nails a day or every other day or whenever she starts to get scratchy.

OMG...I am still in shock that a vet would suggest sedating a bird to trim it's nails....I must be the only one shocked by that...very weird...is it an avian vet? Our avian vet does not sedate birds for that. She towels them and once they are toweled they settle right down. Wow, I am still trying to wrap my brain around that one. LOL

Anyway, I do all of our birds...my avian vet is two hours away so on one of our yearly checkups I asked her to show me....she showed me how to do nails, clip flight feathers and use a dremel for beaks...........saves me a lot of money...
For my hahns and lovebird, I trim their nails when they are looking long but my caique is different....for some reason his beak and nails grow freakishly fast so I do his quite often, like every other month.

OMG I must have missed that, sedating to trim not a good thing at all!! :(
