Nic Nic..."World's Quietest" Eleonora Cockatoo
Some of you may have seen my posts over the past week.

We adopted our cockatoo Nic Nic last week, he has been incredible, he is sweet, quiet, playful and has already began talking a bit for us, even though he never said a word to his past owners.

Problem here is, I am certain my 3 year old is allergic to him. We have a doctors appointment tomorrow, just to be sure, but when ever he is around him, or even in our living room at this point, his eyes get red, irritated and he begins to have a difficult time breathing.

My wife took the boys out for the day and my son was fine, no trouble at all...they got home around 3pm and by 4:30 he was very sick again.

I have given Nic Nic baths, but have NO IDEA what else can be done.

We adore this little bird, he has become a beloved family member very quickly, but I cannot have my 3 year old ill.

Any help or suggestions would be incredibly welcome.

Daily bathing, air filtration system, separate room with closed door, and keep the cage cleaned often. They create what you called a powder dust and a lot of people are allergic to them. African Greys, Cockatoos, and Cockatiels have it.

Does anyone know how effective allergy shots are when it comes to bird allergies, that and antihistimines may help. Along with getting an air purifier, changing the cage paper daily and maybe restricting certain places in your home that Nic Nic can be.

Yes, get an air filtration system! it is definitely because of the powder that cockatoos give off!

I hope everything turns out okay, but it unfortunatly sounds like hes allergic :( Nic nic sounds like the perfect bird too. I really hope you guys will be able to find a solution. If the allergies cant be controlled maybe an outdoor aviary/bird house?

This is very interesting, I was fostering an Umbrella cockatoo here for a few weeks & whenever my grandchildren would come over my grandson would keep sneezing & he would keep rubbing his eyes & his eyes would be all red. My grandkids thought that I should keep the bird tho cuz she would let them touch & scritch her. I had a Yellow Naped Amazon here for the past 6 months & a Golden Retriever here for the past 4 & 1/2 years & he was never bothered by either of those. So now I guess that narrows it down to the cockatoo. My grandson is 6 & 1/2 years old. They are coming here on Wed, so we will put this to the test. The cockatoo kept poking holes through all my shirts so I took her back to the rescue.

A high quality air purifier should help! I hope you're able to keep him!
