Boarding

Hi was just wondering if anybody is aware of a good place to board our 3 year old White Bellied Caique called Beaker. We have to leave the country for 15 days due to a family wedding and are desperately looking for somewhere for her to stay. In the past we have used what seems like our only option in Orlando but were not impressed with how they care for boarding birds!! If anyone knows of anywhere they recommend within an hour or so of Orlando the info would be greatly appreciated as we don't want her to go into solitary confinement again as its our only option locally. It's best to quarantine birds especially in boarding situations. To make sure they don't get sick from other birds.

Boarding any animal scares me. Especially birds because PBFD is crazy contagious, and absolutely scary. The best thing (IMO) is to check the yellow pages (or google) for people around Orlando that boards birds, then physically check them out. If they don't let you see their boarding facilities, DO NOT board your bird there.

Many breeders also do boarding, and reputable breeders are very very careful with diseases for obvious reasons, and many times they are in the business cuz they love birds, not just for money. So you may want to call around local bird breeders and see if they board.

You may have to take Beaker in to get tested for common communicable diseases before boarding facilities will take them. It is probably a good idea to do that anyway for proof after the fact if something (cross fingers) does happen you got proof he was healthy before boarding.

Absolute ideal situation is a trustworthy friend who doesn't own any birds to come and feed them while you are away.

The only place I can find online is the place we have used previously and would rather not use again. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be anywhere around Orlando that I can find. Is there anyone on the forum from the area that used somewhere locally that they would recommend ? Or a quarantine place locally ? A little stuck here i'm afraid

Well here is a thought would it be possible for you all not to go and just send a gift instead of going ? I mean if they are not close family or someone you have not seen in yrs I would not bother going . It seems as though my husbands side of the family always has something going on and we simply cannot afford to go everytime and it is mainly folks we have not seen in yrs and we dont feel too bad about saying jeeze I wish we could but we really cant due to work and such and etc .... I hope you will think hard about this one what is more important to you ? your birds health or that family memebers wedding whom you have not seen in yrs ? Im not guilting you but you said you dont like the ppl you boarded with before so why put yourself through that again ? food for thought Good luck .

We're definitely going as we've already paid for the flights and hotel etc, not going isn't an option, I just wanted to see of anyone in the Orlando area has any good information or positive reviews on places that they have boarded with recently. Thanks for your concern,

Do you have an avian vet ? lots of the AVs around here board birds.Check with some local vets in your area.If you still can't find one you can talk to my wife but we're 2 hrs from you.(South of Tampa) I'm sure she'd want a vet check because we have so many birds all though we do have a quarantine,your bird would still be in a room by himself(just human company).

I am not from Florida, however, my Aviary vet boards birds. Perhaps you can find an Aviary vet who has a boarding facility. Good luck

I just did a Yellow Page search for your area and you do have an Aviary vet near your area and they do board birds.

I know this is not helpful at all...but good luck! Im so worried about when the time comes when I have to board my lil guy! *sigh* Please keep us up to date on what you decide (im on the other coast) but would still like to know what you figured out so that way I know where to begin when the time comes that I need to board

Would just like to say thanks for everyone's help, I found somewhere online that was said to board, but they no longer do. However, they highly recommended a retired lady locally who boards small to medium sized birds. I contacted her and we are going to visit tomorrow to meet her and see her boarding facilities. Fingers crossed. I'll post how it went tomorrow evening as if its good someone else here on the forum may also benefit. Thanks again, Gaz

Hi, I have been recommended a small boarding facility by a store who no longer boards. I contacted the lady ( Who is now retired ) and we are visiting tomorrow afternoon. She sounds very nice and friendly and we're really looking forward to seeing what she has to offer. I hope its ok as the other place we experienced was awful, they just put the bird in a little room and shut the door !!! More of a stock room than avian boarding, personally I don't think it should be allowed. Will keep you posted, thanks. As far as the little trip is concerned we are going to my best friends wedding in Rome, Italy for 4 nights and then back to our home town of Lincoln, United Kingdom for 9 nights, really excited, just wish we could take the Beak with us though she might find it a little chilly
